Job Description
The Theatre Assistant plays a critical role in the surgical process by ensuring that all instruments and surfaces are sterile and ready for use, assisting surgical teams before, during, and after procedures, preparing patients for surgery, and maintaining proper surgical waste disposal practices. The role requires strong attention to detail, ability to follow established protocols, and physical fitness to support patient movement. The Theatre Assistant is also expected to support capacity-building initiatives for junior staff and uphold the organization’s safeguarding and ethical standards.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Sterilize surgical instruments and equipment following hygiene and security protocols
Prepare surgical trolleys and assist the surgical team throughout operations
Prepare patients for surgery, explain procedures, and transport them to the operating room
Scrub, glove, mask, and gown the surgical team
Hand surgical instruments to the surgeon, cut sutures, and apply dressings
Prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
Safely dispose of surgical waste in line with IPC protocols
Ensure biomedical equipment is clean and in good working condition
Uphold high ethical standards and integrity in line with the MTI Code of Conduct
Supervise direct reports, provide mentorship, and support staff development
Conduct performance evaluations and manage disciplinary processes
Perform any other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education & Certification:
Certificate in Theatre Techniques (Required)
Registration with Allied Health Professionals Council (Required)
Valid practicing license (Required)
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role (Required)
Experience working with an international NGO (Added advantage)
Knowledge:
Thorough understanding of surgical instrument sterilization
Strong knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices
Skills:
Proficiency in applying dressings and preparing specimens
Good spoken English and communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Abilities:
Physically fit and capable of moving patients between beds and trolleys
Self-driven with initiative
Detail-oriented and able to follow instructions precisely
Committed to ethical conduct and safeguarding policies
