Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA)
Government Agency
Kampala, Uganda
The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) is a government agency mandated to provide weather and climate services for the protection of life, property, and the environment, as well as to support sustainable development through accurate, timely, and accessible meteorological information. With a mission to promote the application of weather and climate services in all sectors of the economy, UNMA has earned national and regional recognition for its role in climate risk reduction, disaster preparedness, and environmental management.
The authority fosters a collaborative and inclusive work culture that values scientific excellence, innovation, and continuous learning, offering career opportunities for meteorologists, data analysts, researchers, and administrative professionals in both centralized and regional setups. Established by the UNMA Act of 2012, it has evolved from the Department of Meteorology under the Ministry of Water and Environment into a semi-autonomous authority, adopting advanced technology such as automated weather stations and satellite data systems to enhance service delivery.
With a presence across all regions of Uganda and partnerships with international climate bodies, UNMA’s operational model is built on innovation, data-driven forecasting, and public awareness campaigns. Core values such as integrity, professionalism, accountability, and service excellence guide its operations, while its CSR initiatives include climate education in schools, community awareness programs, and support for farmers with agro-meteorological advisories.
