Unilever in Uganda is seeking a dynamic communications partner to enhance external stakeholder engagement, sustainability initiatives, and content development across traditional and digital platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Client Management: Act as a liaison between the agency and its clients, understanding their objectives, needs, and challenges. Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, providing strategic counsel, and managing expectations.

  • Strategic Planning: Develop PR and communication strategies aligned with clients' goals and objectives. Identify target audiences, key messages, and communication channels to effectively reach and engage stakeholders.

  • Media Relations: Cultivate relationships with journalists, editors, bloggers, and influencers to secure media coverage for clients. Pitch story ideas, press releases, and thought leadership articles to relevant media outlets and respond to media inquiries.

  • Content Creation: Develop compelling content, including press releases, articles, blog posts, social media posts, and multimedia materials (e.g., videos, infographics) to convey clients' messages and enhance their brand visibility.

  • Social Media Management: Develop and implement social media strategies to build and maintain clients' online presence. Create engaging content, manage social media accounts, monitor conversations, and analyze metrics to measure the effectiveness of social media efforts.

  • Crisis Communication: Develop crisis communication plans and protocols to effectively manage and mitigate reputational risks. Provide rapid response and strategic counsel during crisis situations, including media inquiries, social media monitoring, and stakeholder communications.

  • Event Management: Plan and execute events, such as press conferences, product launches, and media briefings, to generate publicity and enhance clients' visibility. Coordinate logistics, invite media and stakeholders, and manage event communications.

  • Measurement and Reporting: Track and analyze PR and communication activities to measure their impact and effectiveness. Generate reports and metrics to demonstrate the value of PR efforts and inform future strategies.

  • Industry Research: Conduct research and analysis to stay informed about industry trends, competitive landscapes, and emerging issues that may affect clients. Provide insights and recommendations based on research findings.

  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues within the agency, including account managers, creative professionals, and digital marketers, to integrate PR and communication efforts with broader marketing and branding initiatives.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field is typically required. Advanced degrees or professional certifications in PR or communications may be preferred.

  • Experience: Relevant work experience in PR, communications, or related fields is usually required, especially for senior positions. Previous experience working in an agency setting and managing client accounts is highly valued.

  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills are necessary for developing and executing effective PR and communication strategies that align with clients' business objectives.

  • Media Relations Skills: Excellent media relations skills, including the ability to pitch stories, build relationships with journalists, and secure media coverage across traditional and digital media platforms.

  • Writing and Editing Skills: Strong writing and editing skills are essential for crafting compelling content, including press releases, articles, blog posts, and social media posts, that effectively conveys clients' messages and engages target audiences.

  • Digital and Social Media Proficiency: Proficiency in digital and social media platforms, tools, and analytics is important for managing clients' online presence and optimizing their visibility and engagement on digital channels.

  • Crisis Communication Expertise: Experience in crisis communication management, including developing crisis communication plans, handling media inquiries, and managing reputational risks during crisis situations.

  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary for building rapport with clients, colleagues, media contacts, and other stakeholders. The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, is essential.

  • Project Management Abilities: Strong project management skills are required for managing multiple clients, projects, and deadlines simultaneously. The ability to prioritize tasks, allocate resources, and meet deadlines is critical in a fast-paced agency environment.

  • Creativity and Innovation: Creativity and innovation are important for developing unique and impactful PR and communication strategies that differentiate clients from competitors and capture the attention of target audiences.
