Role Overview

The Manager Credit Underwriting for Personal Banking will lead credit and lending activities within the personal banking segment. This role is responsible for defining risk appetite, developing and implementing risk assessments for new and existing products, pricing strategies, credit decisions, and ensuring timely loan disbursements. The role supports efficient processing and monitors disbursement progress against service level agreements (SLAs).

How to Apply

  • Review credit proposals from analysts to ensure compliance with Equity Bank’s Credit Policies, Risk Management procedures, and regulatory requirements including BOU, FIA, and funders.

  • Provide guidance on structuring credit proposals to minimize risk and ensure full repayment. Ensure timely review of proposals and limit excesses within agreed SLAs.

  • Maintain and review service level agreements between commercial and credit teams annually to sustain competitive service delivery.

  • Train and coach branch staff, Credit/Relationship Managers, and Credit analysts on credit assessment, deal structuring, policies, and procedures. Conduct roadshows on underwriting criteria to maintain loan quality.

  • Perform thorough analysis of financial statements and credit requests, including new, changed, refinancing, and annual due diligence assessments.

  • Own and maintain the Credit Risk Management framework, including credit risk policy, risk appetite statements, and key risk indicators.

  • Define credit risk portfolio management requirements and oversee monitoring, control, and forecasting activities.

  • Develop credit risk analytics and reporting to ensure the bank operates within risk appetite limits.

  • Enhance credit risk validation frameworks, policies, and procedures regularly.

  • Manage the bank’s Consumer Credit portfolio as part of portfolio oversight.

  • Contribute to the development and setup of the overall Risk function.

  • Lead and mentor credit analysts within the Credit Risk unit, oversee onboarding, and support career development.

  • Advise stakeholders on credit risk management, policies, and best practices across the bank.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Accountancy, Finance, or related field.

  • Professional qualifications such as Credit Risk Management certification, CPA, or ACCA are an advantage.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in banking or related fields in credit, risk management, corporate lending, credit analysis, credit approval, or internal audit.

  • Strong managerial and leadership abilities.

  • Proficiency in statistical data analysis, including regression and time series analysis, with an understanding of credit risk factors.

  • Solid knowledge of quantitative credit risk modeling (PDs, LGDs, EADs) and portfolio credit metrics (limits, expected/unexpected loss, capital allocation).

  • Ability to work well under pressure and confidently engage senior management.

  • Experience with data analysis, modeling, and validation tools.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Assertiveness, negotiation skills, creativity, and self-awareness.

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently or as part of a team.
