Job Description
Lira University was established as a Public University by Statutory Instrument No.35, of July 18th 2015 to expand access to equitable quality Higher Education in the country and to respond to the critical Human Resource Development needs of the country. The University is governed by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 as amended 2006 of the Republic of Uganda. The University is located in Lango Sub-region in Northern Uganda, Lira City. In order to fulfill the current mandate and to position the University to assist local community and build their capacity for socio economic enhancement, the university has to fill positions with personnel with required skills and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Delivering lectures, seminars, and workshops on various topics related to midwifery, including prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, neonatal care, and women's health.
Developing course materials such as syllabi, lesson plans, and instructional materials.
Supervising clinical experiences for students, including guiding them through practical training in maternity wards, birthing centers, and other healthcare settings.
Mentoring and advising students on academic and professional matters, including career pathways and research opportunities.
Assessing student performance through exams, assignments, presentations, and clinical evaluations.
Keeping abreast of advancements in midwifery education and incorporating evidence-based practices into teaching.
Conducting research in areas relevant to midwifery, such as maternal health outcomes, childbirth practices, perinatal care, and women's reproductive health.
Securing research funding through grants and other sources to support research initiatives within the department.
Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field.
Collaborating with other faculty members, healthcare professionals, and community organizations on research projects.
Supervising graduate students' research projects and theses.
Participating in departmental meetings, committees, and other administrative activities.
Contributing to curriculum development and revision to ensure alignment with accreditation standards and evolving practices in midwifery.
Participating in accreditation processes and program reviews.
Providing leadership and guidance to junior faculty members and staff.
Engaging in community outreach and professional networking to promote the department and its programs.
Qualifications and Competencies
Advanced degree (usually a Master's or Doctoral degree) in midwifery or a related field.
Clinical experience as a midwife, preferably in diverse healthcare settings.
Teaching experience, either in academic or clinical settings, with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to students.
Research experience with a record of publications and/or grant funding.
Active participation in professional organizations and ongoing professional development to stay current with developments in midwifery practice and education.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and community partners.
Depending on the institution, certification or licensure as a midwife may be required.
