The Medical Underwriter is responsible for evaluating medical insurance proposals—both new and renewals—to determine appropriate risk acceptance, terms, and pricing. The role ensures adherence to Britam’s underwriting standards, regulatory compliance, and portfolio profitability while supporting sales and customer service teams with technical expertise.

How to Apply
Review and assess individual and group medical insurance applications in line with established underwriting guidelines and the company's risk appetite.
Analyze medical histories, utilization trends, and demographic data to evaluate risk exposure.
Collaborate with actuarial and pricing teams to set competitive and sustainable premium rates.
Provide technical underwriting support and quotations to the sales team and intermediaries.
Offer insights to product development teams based on underwriting experience and market feedback.
Monitor performance of the underwriting portfolio and recommend updates to underwriting criteria when necessary.
Ensure accurate documentation and timely issuance of policy documents and endorsements.
Conduct periodic reviews of active policies to identify emerging risks and recommend adjustments.
Maintain strong working relationships with clients, brokers, healthcare providers, and regulators.
Ensure compliance with Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) requirements and adapt practices to evolving market and legal frameworks.
Stay informed on medical trends, competitor offerings, and industry innovations.
Meet individual and departmental targets as outlined in the strategy map, balanced scorecard, and personal KPIs.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Key Working Relationships
Internal:
Collaborate closely with departments such as Actuarial, Claims, Customer Service, Product Development, and Sales.
External:
Clients and policyholders
Insurance brokers and agents
Healthcare providers
Regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Actuarial Science, Statistics, or a related field.
Professional certification in Insurance (e.g., CII or equivalent).
2–4 years of experience in medical insurance underwriting.
Strong understanding of Ugandan healthcare systems and insurance industry practices.
Experience in provider relations, pricing, and risk evaluation.
Skills and Competencies

Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
Solid understanding of insurance regulatory requirements.
Customer-focused with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
