Job Description
Reporting to the General Secretary (through the Deputy General Secretary, Administration & Labour Relations), the Senior Assistant Secretary oversees execution of GNAT decisions, policies, and programmes across the region. The role directs regional coordination and participation in membership recruitment and retention; liaises with executives, districts, and local officers; coordinates and delivers member training; resolves members’ and staff cases; and ensures proper administration, financial discipline, and performance management across regional secretariats. The postholder attends district/local meetings, monitors branches, prepares and submits monthly financial reports and periodic activity reports, represents GNAT with government and non-governmental bodies on education/welfare matters, projects the union through media with the regional executive, and performs other duties assigned by the General Secretary or representative.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Implement GNAT decisions, policies, and programmes within the region.
Coordinate and participate in recruitment and retention of members.
Liaise with regional executive, districts, and local officers; attend district/local meetings.
Coordinate and deliver training for members across the region.
Resolve members’ and staff personal cases; provide guidance and support.
Monitor district and local branches; ensure proper administration of secretariats.
Enforce financial discipline; submit monthly financial reports to HQ via the Financial Controller.
Appraise regional staff performance and drive accountability.
Prepare and submit termly, annual, and ad-hoc activity reports.
Engage government and non-governmental organisations on education/teacher welfare.
Project the union through media/other channels with the regional executive.
Perform any other duties assigned by the General Secretary or delegate.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Professional teacher not below Assistant Director I with ≥4 years in rank at appointment; OR Assistant Secretary I (Assistant Regional Secretary) with ≥3 years in rank at appointment.
First degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject area.
Age: 40–55 years at time of appointment.
Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Personal attributes: high responsibility, integrity, dependability, initiative; excellent interpersonal skills; tolerance, solidarity, unity, resilience; strong managerial and leadership skills; able to balance competing demands, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and travel as required.
