Job Description
Job Title: Security Associate
Organization: World Food Programme (WFP)
Location: Arua, Uganda
About the Role
The Security Associate will support WFP operations in the Arua Area Office by ensuring the safety and security of staff, assets, and operations. Working closely with both the Head of the Area Office (administrative) and the Head of Security at the Country Office (technical), the incumbent will be responsible for implementing and monitoring security measures in line with WFP and UN security policies.
This is a field-based position requiring flexibility and the ability to report for duty on short notice.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Monitor and analyze local security risks and incidents; prepare accurate reports and trend analyses to support decision-making.
Collect, interpret, and distribute security-related information using WFP tools to ensure timely communication with relevant stakeholders.
Build strong networks with local authorities, law enforcement, UN agencies, NGOs, and community leaders to facilitate access and minimize risk.
Coordinate and support the safe planning and execution of staff field missions and conduct area-specific security assessments.
Analyze assessment findings and provide recommendations to reduce risks and enhance security for operations.
Support the Country Director in managing security risks, ensuring alignment with UN Security Management System (UNSMS) requirements.
Implement and monitor compliance with Minimum Operational Security Standards (MOSS) and related mitigation measures.
Maintain and manage security-related equipment, including recommending improvements based on operational needs.
Ensure access control systems are functioning and strictly followed to maintain a secure environment.
Develop and review emergency preparedness plans, including physical safety measures and procedures.
Deliver basic security training to staff and identify further training needs.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
A university degree in Community Psychology, Social Work, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
A diploma from a recognized Military or Police Academy with relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a university degree.
Experience:
At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in security and safety, preferably in a humanitarian, military, or police context.
Prior experience in humanitarian or refugee response settings is highly desirable.
Background in INGOs, diplomatic missions, or corporate security is an asset.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and familiarity with digital mapping tools/GIS systems.
Strong knowledge of Ugandan security laws and procedures is an advantage.
Physically fit and capable of performing field-based security functions.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Willingness to travel and respond to duty calls on short notice.
Languages:
Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.
Knowledge of local Ugandan languages spoken in the Arua region is an added advantage.
