Background
Chronic Hepatitis B (HBV) affects over 254 million people globally, with the highest burden in low- and middle-income countries. In Africa, over 65 million people are affected, and vertical transmission (mother-to-child) remains the leading cause of chronic HBV infection. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends administering a Hepatitis B Birth Dose (HepB BD) within 24 hours of birth to reduce risk.
However, only 18% of newborns in Africa receive a timely birth dose, largely due to over 40% of births occurring outside health facilities. Uganda is one of many countries striving to close this gap.
With funding from Gavi and in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Health, PATH Uganda is conducting a study titled:"Implementing a Learning Agenda on Hepatitis B Birth Dose Vaccine Delivery in Africa"This project explores innovative, community-based models for delivering the HepB BD using Human-Centered Design (HCD) approaches in Butaleja and Lira districts.
