Job Description
These duties and requirements provide a general overview of the roles and responsibilities of Registered Nurses and Midwives. Specific duties, requirements, and qualifications may vary based on the healthcare setting, specialty area, and level of practice within nursing and midwifery.
Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Assessment: Perform comprehensive assessments of patients' health status, including physical, psychological, and socio-cultural factors. Monitor vital signs, observe symptoms, and collect relevant health data to develop individualized care plans.
Patient Care: Provide direct patient care, including administering medications, treatments, and interventions prescribed by healthcare providers. Perform nursing procedures such as wound care, catheterization, and injections, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
Health Education: Educate patients and their families about health conditions, treatment options, medication management, and self-care techniques. Provide guidance on preventive healthcare measures, lifestyle modifications, and community resources to promote health and wellness.
Patient Advocacy: Advocate for patients' rights, preferences, and needs within the healthcare system. Serve as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare providers to ensure effective communication and collaboration in care delivery.
Collaborative Care: Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including physicians, specialists, therapists, and social workers, to develop and implement comprehensive care plans. Participate in care conferences, rounds, and case discussions to coordinate patient care and achieve optimal outcomes.
Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in electronic health records (EHRs) or other healthcare documentation systems. Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards for record-keeping and confidentiality.
Clinical Leadership: Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to nursing colleagues, students, and support staff. Serve as a resource for evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, and professional standards of nursing care.
Emergency Response: Respond promptly to medical emergencies, trauma cases, and critical incidents, providing immediate nursing care and support. Initiate emergency interventions, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and stabilize patients until additional support arrives.
Continuous Learning: Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as continuing education, certification courses, and clinical workshops, to enhance nursing knowledge, skills, and competencies. Stay informed about current trends, research findings, and best practices in nursing and midwifery.
Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety initiatives within healthcare organizations. Identify opportunities for process improvement, patient satisfaction enhancement, and risk reduction through data analysis and evidence-based practice.

Qualifications and Competencies
The ideal candidate must possess a minimum of Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution;
Must be registered with a valid practicing license from the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council;
Must have a minimum of two (2) years working experience as a Registered Nurse in a reputed and busy Health setting;
Experience in ICU or NICU is a must.
Possession of certification in Basic Life Support Other certification e.g. ACLS, PALS and Trauma Nursing is an added advantage;
Ability to be resourceful and proactive in dealing with issues that may arise;
Good communication and interpersonal skills; and
Diligent attention to details.
