  • Patient Assessment: ICU nurses perform comprehensive assessments of patients upon admission and throughout their stay in the ICU. This includes monitoring vital signs, assessing neurological status, evaluating respiratory function, and assessing the patient's overall condition.

  • Critical Care Monitoring: They continuously monitor patients' vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate. ICU nurses use advanced monitoring equipment and interpret data to identify changes or abnormalities that may indicate deterioration or improvement in the patient's condition.

  • Medication Administration: ICU nurses administer medications, including intravenous (IV) drugs, vasoactive agents, sedatives, and pain management medications. They monitor the effects of medications, titrate doses as needed, and assess for adverse reactions or complications.

  • Ventilator Management: ICU nurses manage mechanical ventilators for patients who require respiratory support. This includes monitoring ventilator settings, assessing lung compliance, suctioning airways, and troubleshooting ventilator alarms or malfunctions.

  • Patient Advocacy: They act as advocates for their patients, ensuring that their needs are met and their rights are respected. ICU nurses communicate with other members of the healthcare team, coordinate care, and address concerns or preferences expressed by patients and their families.

  • Wound Care: ICU nurses provide wound care for patients with surgical incisions, pressure ulcers, or other skin breakdown. They assess wounds, change dressings, and monitor for signs of infection or complications.

  • Emergency Response: In the event of a medical emergency or deterioration in a patient's condition, ICU nurses respond quickly and efficiently. They initiate emergency interventions, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and stabilize patients until additional support or resources are available.

  • Patient Education: ICU nurses educate patients and their families about their medical conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions. They provide information about medications, procedures, and follow-up care to help patients make informed decisions and participate in their recovery.

  • Collaboration and Communication: ICU nurses collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients. They communicate changes in patient status, report critical findings, and participate in multidisciplinary rounds to discuss patient progress and goals of care.

  • Emotional Support: ICU nurses provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families during times of crisis and uncertainty. They offer comfort, empathy, and compassionate care to help alleviate anxiety and promote healing.

  • Registered with the Ugandan Nurses and Midwives Council & holds current practicing licence for Nursing.

  • One year working experience as a nurse, experience in the ICU (desirable).

  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with all the multi-disciplinary team, patients and relatives.

  • Competent knowledge and skills with in critical care
