Project Overview
The IDI Meningitis Research Team is engaged in multiple studies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of adult meningitis in Kampala. Ongoing studies include:
COAST – An observational cohort study on meningitis etiologies and outcomes.
IMPROVE – A randomized controlled trial evaluating TB preventive therapy strategies for adults with cryptococcal meningitis.
HARVEST – A double-blinded phase III trial testing high-dose oral rifampicin for TB meningitis.
PLATFORM-CM – A multi-arm open-label trial assessing novel antifungal and adjunctive therapies versus standard care.
To support the continued success of these studies, IDI is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to join the team in Mbarara.
Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician will ensure the accurate preparation, dispensing, documentation, and accountability of investigational and routine medications in accordance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and institutional SOPs.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Pharmacy Operations
Review and verify prescriptions for accuracy and protocol compliance.
Dispense study medications according to SOPs and GCP standards.
Maintain precise stock records and dispensing logs.
Conduct quarterly inventory audits, monitor storage conditions, and report discrepancies.
Ensure proper labeling, handling, blinding, and shipment of investigational products.
Regulatory Compliance
Maintain documentation for investigational drug accountability (receipt, storage, dispensation, return, and destruction).
Ensure compliance with sponsor and regulatory guidelines.
Support audits and monitoring visits with complete and accurate records.
Collaboration & Reporting
Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly pharmacy reports.
Participate in protocol development, site initiation, and monitoring visits.
Work with the Study Coordinator and Principal Investigator to ensure continuity of drug supply and adherence to randomization procedures.
Attend all study team meetings and contribute to discussions on patient care and study activities.
Training & Documentation
Maintain up-to-date training and certification in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
Ensure proper documentation of all dispensing and pharmacy activities.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Diploma in Pharmacy from a recognized institution.
Minimum 3 years of experience in a clinical or research setting.
Registration with the Allied Health Professionals Council is mandatory.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic medical/pharmacy records systems.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
