Job Summary

Baylor-Uganda is seeking a dedicated Pharmacy Technician to support the delivery of comprehensive pharmacy services at the Centre of Excellence (COE). This role involves accurate prescription verification, medication dispensing, stock management, patient education, and adherence counselling—all in line with Baylor-Uganda’s medical and psychosocial treatment guidelines. The Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality pharmaceutical care, minimizing medication errors, preventing drug stockouts, and supporting internal audits and quality assurance processes.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prescription Review & Dispensing:Accurately review prescriptions based on patient-specific parameters (e.g., weight, height, body surface area) and dispense medications in line with Ministry of Health and Baylor-Uganda protocols.

  • Patient Counselling & Education:Educate patients and caregivers on proper medication use, adherence, side effects, and potential drug-drug or drug-food interactions. Ensure patients understand dosage, especially for liquid formulations.

  • Inventory & Stock Management:Manage stock at the pharmacy store using FEFO (First Expiry, First Out) principles. Monitor storage conditions daily to preserve medication quality and efficacy.

  • Record Keeping & Reporting:Maintain accurate daily records of drugs dispensed and received. Account for all pharmaceutical stock and report discrepancies in line with pharmacy protocols.

  • Adherence Monitoring:Review patient charts—particularly for those on HAART and anti-TB therapy—to identify and report adherence challenges to the supervising pharmacist.

  • Expired Drug Management:Remove expired or patient-returned medications, document appropriately, and prepare them for safe disposal in compliance with waste management procedures.

  • Audit Participation:Support and document findings during monthly and quarterly pharmacy audits. Ensure audit recommendations are addressed and implemented.

  • Pharmacy Cleanliness & Waste Disposal:Maintain a clean and organized pharmacy environment. Manage pharmaceutical waste responsibly and in accordance with Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) standards.
