Job Description
The Legal Officer, under the supervision of the Chief of Section, will be responsible for:
Representing the Secretary-General in UNDT proceedings (written and oral).
Handling legal issues related to international, public, private, and administrative law.
Conducting legal research, analysis, and drafting legal documents and opinions.
Preparing studies, background papers, reports, and commentaries.
Reviewing legal instruments and identifying key issues and inconsistencies.
Advising on matters related to UN Charter, General Assembly resolutions, and internal laws.
Participating in legal negotiations and the settlement of disputes.
Assessing and preparing evidence for cases.
Advising on human resources legal matters and reviewing administrative cases.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Represent the Secretary-General in UNDT litigation.
Conduct legal research and prepare briefs, reports, and legal opinions.
Review legal materials and administrative instruments.
Provide advice on employment, labour, and administrative law matters.
Assess and prepare evidence for internal justice cases.
Assist in drafting agreements and support negotiation and settlement processes.
Review staff grievances and related HR legal issues.
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards in legal proceedings.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in law is required.
A first-level university degree in law with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu.
Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible legal experience is required.
At least two years must include experience in litigation, including leading witness evidence.
Experience in administrative/employment law is desirable.
Experience with UN staff rules and policies or similar international organizations is desirable.
Languages:
Fluency in English is required.
Knowledge of French is desirable.
Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
Competencies:
Professionalism: Expertise in international and administrative law, litigation experience, strong analytical skills, and discretion.
Communication: Clear and effective in oral and written communication; good interpersonal skills.
Planning and Organizing: Strong organizational ability, ability to prioritize, and efficient time management.
