Job Description
The duties of Internship Optical Assistants can vary depending on the specific organization, but typically include a combination of administrative tasks and patient care responsibilities within an optical setting
Duties and Responsibilities
Assisting Optometrists/Ophthalmologists: Internship Optical Assistants may help optometrists or ophthalmologists with various tasks during eye examinations and procedures. This could involve preparing examination rooms, escorting patients, and providing assistance with tests and procedures as directed.
Patient Intake and Record-Keeping: Greet patients, obtain and record patient information, including medical history and current complaints or concerns. Input data into electronic health records (EHR) systems accurately.
Pre-Testing: Conduct preliminary tests and screenings such as visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and eye pressure measurements (tonometry) under the supervision of licensed professionals.
Frame Styling and Dispensing: Assist patients in selecting frames, educating them about lens options, and ensuring proper fit and comfort. May help with frame adjustments and repairs as needed.
Contact Lens Assistance: Provide support for contact lens fittings, including instruction on insertion, removal, and care of contact lenses. Assist with ordering and inventory management of contact lenses.
Maintaining Cleanliness and Organization: Keep examination rooms, waiting areas, and optical dispensaries clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies. Follow infection control protocols and maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
Educating Patients: Provide patients with information about eye care, preventive measures, and treatment options as instructed by optometrists or ophthalmologists. Answer patient questions and address concerns to the best of your ability.
Administrative Support: Assist with scheduling appointments, answering phones, and managing patient inquiries. Help with billing, insurance verification, and processing payments as needed.
Learning and Development: Take advantage of the internship experience to learn about various aspects of optometry or ophthalmology practice, including equipment operation, diagnostic procedures, and industry standards.
Professionalism and Ethical Conduct: Maintain confidentiality of patient information and adhere to professional standards and ethical guidelines. Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and sensitivity in all interactions with patients and colleagues.
