Job Description
The Field Operator will play a critical role in piloting and scaling a regenerative agriculture model. They will directly engage with farmers to implement sustainable practices, maintain system functionality, and support the development of local agri-businesses. The ideal candidate will be passionate about agroecology, skilled in basic technical maintenance, and driven to create community impact through entrepreneurship.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Farmer Support & Training
Train farmers in syntropic agroforestry, irrigation scheduling, and water usage
Assist in planting, mulching, and pruning for agroforestry plots
Educate communities on greywater reuse and sustainability
Collect feedback to improve service delivery
System Operation & Maintenance
Operate and maintain solar pumps, ponds, swales, and irrigation infrastructure
Apply permaculture and agroecological practices to improve system performance
Conduct repairs and troubleshoot solar, water, and plumbing issues
Market Access & Business Support
Lead pilot activities to refine business components with farmers
Support market linkage efforts for produce and value-added products
Help cooperatives with branding and sales strategies
Document productivity and impact for stakeholders
Data Collection & Reporting
Monitor energy and water use and collect soil/plant performance data
Track farmer adoption and share weekly progress reports
Community Engagement
Coordinate with community “Water Mayors” for payment and compliance
Mobilize farmers for trainings and maintenance
Address mobile money and fee payment issues

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications:
Diploma or Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Environmental Science, or related field
Proficiency in English and Ateso
Ability to conduct basic solar and plumbing repairs
Experience:
Practical experience in agroforestry, irrigation, solar or water systems
Nice-to-Have:
Permaculture or agroecology training
Familiarity with Soroti farming communities
Motorcycle license or experience riding
Core Competencies:
Self-driven and able to work independently
Creative and solution-oriented mindset
Comfortable with experimentation and innovation
Strong alignment with Rootical’s values and vision
Passionate about regenerative agriculture and social entrepreneurship
