Location: Kampala, Uganda
Contract Type: National contract, 12 months (with possibility of extension)
Travel: Frequent travel to project sites
Role Overview
The IDMC is seeking a highly organized and analytical Data Coordinator to lead monitoring and data-related activities on internal displacement caused by conflict, violence, and disasters in Uganda and the broader sub-region. This role will be instrumental in collecting, curating, and analysing displacement data, engaging with partners, and contributing to the development of IDMC’s tools and publications.

How to Apply
1. Data Collection and Analysis
Continuously monitor internal displacement events across the sub-region using a wide range of sources: government institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, academic research, media, and more.
Collect, verify, and curate data related to displacement drivers.
Upload validated data to the IDMC database, following strict data standards for consistency, frequency, and accuracy.
Provide well-documented estimates and highlight any data limitations or caveats.
Identify emerging trends, data gaps, and methodological issues.
Deliver weekly updates on significant displacement events in the sub-region.
Contribute to IDMC’s flagship publications including the Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID), Mid-Year Update, regional reports, and other analytical products.
Review and analyse data from partners to validate methods and ensure reliability.
2. Partner Engagement
Serve as IDMC’s primary data liaison in the sub-region, fostering relationships with key stakeholders: governments, UN bodies, NGOs, civil society, and academia.
Lead regional collaboration and support peer reviews of IDMC outputs with local partners.
Identify opportunities to enhance visibility and integration of partner data (e.g., through the Global Repository of Good Practices).
Disseminate findings and promote engagement with IDMC’s work at the regional level.
3. Capacity Strengthening
Identify and support initiatives to improve partner capabilities in data collection and analysis.
Provide technical input on tools, advocate for key indicators, and prepare training materials.
Organize or support capacity-building workshops and peer learning exchanges.
Collaborate closely with IDMC’s Capacity Strengthening team to align on strategy, monitor impact, and ensure consistency.
4. Additional Responsibilities
Offer feedback on IDMC’s data systems and tools.
Participate in project implementation, research activities, or field missions as needed.
Essential:
Master’s degree in international affairs, social sciences, displacement/migration studies, information science, statistics, or a related field.
3–5 years of experience in research, data collection, and quantitative data analysis.
Strong background in managing databases and large data sets.
Excellent desk research and secondary data review skills.
Proven attention to detail and organizational skills.
Demonstrated experience building and managing partnerships across sectors.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French.
Ability to work well under pressure and deliver results under tight deadlines.
Desirable:
Knowledge of the East and Central Africa sub-region, particularly in relation to conflict- and disaster-induced displacement.
Familiarity with international displacement frameworks and operational challenges.
Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, Python, R, or other statistical software.
Skilled in using online research and information management platforms.
