Job Description

Job Title: Customs Declarant Officer

Work Location: Hariss International Limited – Kampala, Uganda

Reports To: Logistics Manager


Position Overview:

The Customs Declarant Officer is responsible for the accurate classification, documentation, clearance, and timely release of import and export shipments. This role ensures full compliance with customs laws and regulations while coordinating with relevant stakeholders to facilitate efficient logistics operations.

  • Classify goods accurately and lodge shipment declarations in accordance with tariff and regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare and submit complete and accurate shipping documents for customs processing.

  • Handle the full customs clearance process for both import and export shipments, ensuring timely release from customs custody.

  • Maintain accurate records of all shipment transactions in the freight management system.

  • Assist in computing, filing, and paying duties and taxes to the Bureau of Customs.

  • Monitor shipment timelines including departure, arrival, and customs clearance status to avoid delays.

  • Proactively coordinate with brokers, customs officers, and internal teams to expedite the clearance process.

  • Notify internal logistics teams and clients of any potential delays, including demurrage or detention risks.

  • Ensure timely communication and delivery coordination for all shipments.

  • Perform any other related tasks assigned by the Logistics Manager.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Customs Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Freight Forwarding, Customs Clearance, or Import/Export Logistics.

  • In-depth knowledge of customs regulations, documentation, and clearance processes.

  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Excellent customer service and stakeholder coordination.

  • Ability to reason, calculate duties/taxes, and manage documentation efficiently.
