Job Description
We seek an Arts Project Manager to oversee and ensure the compliant delivery of the British Council’s Arts programming in Uganda for a period of 4 months. The role involves applying specialist expertise, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and coordinating arts activities across the British Council’s global network to align with its cultural relations mission.

Operating in a growing and dynamic creative and cultural sector in Uganda, the Arts Manager will plan, manage, deliver and monitor, a compelling arts programme in Uganda that is in line with our strategy in the sub-Saharan Africa region. Alongside core responsibility for the Uganda portfolio the Arts Manager will contribute to the regional Sub-Saharan Africa programme remit.
This role is expected to make a major contribution to the successful delivery of the British Council’s Arts programme, as well as clearly deliver and communicate the impact of the programme. The post entails working with cross country audiences, facilitate new engagements between artists in the region as well as artists and audiences in SSA and the UK through supporting region wide programmes.
The Arts Manager will plan, manage, deliver, and monitor a dynamic arts programme in Uganda, aligning with the British Council’s Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) strategy. Beyond managing the Uganda portfolio, the role contributes to regional SSA arts initiatives.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- The Arts Manager will drive the successful delivery and communication of the British Council’s Arts programme, fostering engagement between artists and audiences in Uganda, SSA, and the UK through region-wide initiatives. The role emphasises partnership development, capacity building, and supporting youth participation in the creative sector.
- Situated within the Cultural Engagement Strategic Business Unit, which includes arts, education, English, and research, the Arts Manager will collaborate with the SSA Arts regional team and global network to ensure high-quality programme delivery. The Global Arts team delivers impact through four key programmes:
- Culture Connects: Facilitates artistic and cultural exchange between the UK and international partners.
- Spotlights on Culture: Showcases UK cultural diversity at high-profile events.
- Creative Economy: Supports sustainable growth through research, advocacy, and leadership to strengthen creative ecosystems.
- Culture Responds to Global Challenges: Promotes arts to shift attitudes and protect cultural expression, diversity, and heritage.
- The Arts Manager will support projects across these pillars, coordinating with colleagues across the global network to ensure quality delivery.
Relationship & Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain relationships with delivery partners, grantees, and stakeholders to procure services and ensure contract compliance.
- Foster strong internal networks.
Commercial and Financial Management
- Oversee financial planning, ensuring alignment with British Council and client financial year plans.
- Conduct accurate monthly forecasting using SAP, monitor expenditure, ensure compliance with financial policies, and address variances.
Project Management
- Develop and deliver project management plans, identifying and mitigating risks with the Programme Manager.
- Manage procurement, contracting, compliance, and reporting.
- Oversee data management, including timely entry, quality assurance, basic analysis, and progress reporting to meet internal and external funding requirements.
