Job Description

Job Title: Teachers - Science (20 Jobs)

Organisation: Sir Apollo Kaggwa Schools

Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda

The Primary School Science Teacher is responsible for introducing students to fundamental scientific concepts, nurturing curiosity, and inspiring a love for science. This role involves planning and delivering lessons in line with the national curriculum, encouraging hands-on experimentation, and fostering critical thinking. The teacher will create a supportive classroom environment that helps students understand and appreciate the natural world.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Plan and Deliver Science Lessons:

    • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that meet national curriculum standards.

    • Use diverse teaching methods to explain scientific concepts, including interactive activities, experiments, and visual aids.

  2. Promote Scientific Inquiry:

    • Encourage students to ask questions, explore ideas, and apply scientific methods in their learning.

    • Conduct simple and safe experiments that reinforce theoretical lessons.

  3. Assess and Track Progress:

    • Evaluate student understanding through tests, quizzes, practical assessments, and assignments.

    • Provide constructive feedback and support to help students improve.

  4. Create an Inclusive Learning Environment:

    • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere where all students feel valued and encouraged to participate.

    • Address the diverse learning needs of students through differentiated teaching approaches.

  5. Develop Learning Materials:

    • Prepare resources such as charts, models, and activity sheets to make lessons interactive and effective.

    • Incorporate technology and multimedia tools where appropriate.

  6. Support Holistic Student Development:

    • Teach life skills related to health, environment, and sustainability as part of the science curriculum.

    • Integrate practical life applications of science to help students relate learning to real-world situations.

  7. Collaborate with Staff and Parents:

    • Work with fellow teachers to align teaching goals and share best practices.

    • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding student performance and growth.

  8. Extracurricular Participation:

    • Organize science-related events, such as fairs, clubs, or field trips, to enhance learning outside the classroom.

  9. Maintain Classroom Safety:

    • Ensure the safe handling and proper use of materials and equipment during experiments.

    • Teach students about safety rules and precautions in a scientific context.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Diploma in Primary Education (Credit or distinction) with a focus on Science or a related field.

  • Certification: Registered or certified by the Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda.

  • Experience: Prior teaching experience in a primary school setting is preferred.


Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of primary-level scientific concepts and teaching methodologies.

  • Ability to simplify complex ideas for young learners.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.

  • Creativity in teaching to engage and inspire students.

  • Patience, empathy, and enthusiasm for working with children.
