Job Description
As an Apprentice Teaching Assistant in the South Sudan Teacher Development Initiative (SSTDI), your primary role is to learn and contribute by strengthening the teaching and learning process at Senior Five and Senior Six through the Competency-Based Curriculum. Successful candidates will work closely with LEAD staff to support lesson preparation, instructional delivery, assessments, classroom supervision, and learner mentorship.
Teaching assistants will also play a key role in academic support programs, co-curricular activities, discipleship engagement, and departmental administration. This apprenticeship contributes directly to your professional development and the holistic development of learners, supporting the school’s mission to raise Christ-centered leaders.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
1 Lesson Planning and Assessment
- Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, and instructional materials to support effective lesson delivery as allocated on the timetable, including remedial support where necessary.
- Assist in presenting lessons in a clear, engaging, and learner-centred manner, ensuring students understand key concepts and competencies in line with the prescribed curriculum.
- Support the design, administration, and marking of assessments; maintain accurate records of learners’ performance; and provide timely and constructive feedback.
- Identify and apply a variety of teaching strategies, learning resources, and instructional tools to cater for diverse learning needs and enhance student understanding.
- Conduct ongoing research and stay updated on curriculum changes, new topics, and subject content to ensure learners receive relevant and up-to-date knowledge.
2 Student Mentorship and Development
- Model exemplary Christian character, personal integrity, and professionalism in all interactions within the school community.
- Support the management of students’ behaviour in the classroom and school environment by applying appropriate strategies that promote discipline and a positive learning atmosphere.
- Provide basic counselling and guidance to students as they navigate academic, social, and personal challenges, and refer complex issues to appropriate staff.
- Offer mentorship by being approachable, attentive to students’ concerns, encouraging goal setting, and serving as a positive role model in academic and personal conduct.
3 Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of learners’ progress, attendance, assessments, and any notable observations or incidents.
- Prepare and submit required reports, including progress updates, lesson documentation, and curriculum implementation reflections.
- Comply with all school policies, guidelines, and professional expectations.
- Actively participate in school committees aimed at improving academic quality and school performance, such as curriculum, staff development, academic, and recruitment committees.
- Communicate appropriately with parents/guardians regarding learners’ progress, behaviour, and school activities through approved channels.
- Participate in and help organize extracurricular activities, including sports, debates, clubs, practical entrepreneurship, and school trips.
- Attend all mandatory school programs and events, such as visitation days, workshops, student seminars, prefects’ vetting, and open forums.
4 Professional Development
- Support and collaborate with colleagues, including trainee teachers and new staff, to promote continuous professional growth and teamwork.
- Participate in ongoing professional development activities to improve teaching skills, subject mastery, and pedagogical approaches.
- Stay informed about curriculum revisions, educational trends, and CBC updates to ensure alignment with current academic standards.
5 Other Responsibilities
- Undertake any additional duties assigned by the administration in support of the school’s mission, programs, and operational needs, provided that such assignments do not significantly change the nature and scope of your engagement.
