Background
Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), in collaboration with the University of Oxford (UK), the KEMRI-Wellcome Programme (Kenya), and the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), has received funding from the Wellcome Trust to implement the AFRHiCARE project.
As part of this initiative, MakSPH will conduct a baseline study in five districts: Adjumani, Buikwe, Kiryandongo, Luweero, and Masindi. The School is seeking 16 qualified and experienced Research Assistants to support the data collection phase of this study.
Position Summary
The Research Assistants will support the baseline study by collecting both qualitative and quantitative data through face-to-face interviews and observation checklists. They will report directly to the Principal Investigator and adhere to the highest standards of research ethics and data integrity.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Attend the full training program for Research Assistants.
Participate in tool pre-testing and field planning activities.
Travel to assigned field sites to conduct data collection.
Recruit and screen participants, obtain informed consent.
Collect data using approved tools (REDCap and/or KOBO Collect).
Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely submission of data.
Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of sensitive information.
Safeguard all project materials and equipment.
Track data collection progress and ensure participant compensation.
Submit daily updates and reports to supervisors.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
A Bachelor’s degree in a health-related or social science discipline from a recognized institution.
At least 1 year of field experience in data collection, preferably in hospital or health research settings.
Experience with both qualitative and quantitative data collection methodologies.
Proficiency with data collection tools such as REDCap and KOBO Collect.
A valid research ethics certificate.
Fluency in at least one of the study languages: Luganda, Runyoro, Swahili, Lugbara, or Luo (clearly indicate language(s) of fluency in your application).

Experience engaging with diverse communities and sectors.
Terms of Engagement
Successful applicants must complete the training prior to appointment.
Engagement will be on a short-term basis (up to 3 months) with possible renewal based on project needs and performance.
Data collection will take place in the assigned districts.
