Job Description
The WASH Officer will mobilize communities and raise awareness about WASH through participatory approaches including Community Hygiene Clubs (CHC), Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST), School WASH programs, and Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS). The role includes training and supporting WASH structures, preparing action plans, providing technical support for latrine construction and sanitation campaigns, organizing WASH-related events, and contributing to IEC materials development. The officer will also compile reports, manage project funds accurately, and represent WHH in coordination meetings with district water departments and partners.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Mobilize the community regularly through field visits to promote WASH practices.
Implement relevant WASH approaches (CHC, PHAST, School WASH, CLTS) for hygiene and sanitation improvements.
Promote and support the establishment of WASH Clubs in schools using participatory methods such as CHAST, Football for WASH, and Music Dance and Drama (MDD).
Identify, form, and train community WASH structures including Water User Committees and Community Hygiene Promoters.
Prepare annual, quarterly, and monthly WASH action plans and monitoring checklists.
Provide technical support in community latrine construction and sanitation improvements.
Organize and manage WASH-related events effectively.
Collaborate in developing IEC materials with WASH Advisor and Coordinator.
Support MEAL Officer in survey preparation and data collection.
Compile and share timely reports and recommendations on project progress.
Manage and account for project funds responsibly.
Participate in coordination meetings with District Water departments and WASH partners.
Implement work plans with quality and according to schedule.
Represent WHH at meetings, conferences, and WASH events as required.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Community Development, Public Health, Psychology, or relevant fields.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in WASH projects within humanitarian or development contexts, with strong community mobilization skills.
Preferably 2+ years experience in community-based water and sanitation programs; NGO experience is a plus.
Passion for WASH and willingness to learn and contribute to organizational growth.
Knowledge of water supply, borehole drilling, hygiene, sanitation standards, and protocols.
Familiarity with international water, sanitation, and hygiene standards (e.g., SPHERE).
Ability to work independently, multi-task, and deliver results.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and team-working abilities.
Computer literate in word processing and spreadsheets.
Strong planning skills and result ownership.
Willingness to travel extensively to rural communities (4-5 days per week, often by motorbike). Valid motorcycle permit (Class “A”) is desirable.
High integrity and transparency in conduct.
