Shree Sahajanand School, Uganda (SSSU) is a modern co-educational day learning institution offering pre-primary, primary, and secondary schooling to children on the National Curriculum.
Situated in the heart of Kampala City at Bukoto, Nakawa Division, SSSU is strategically built in a quiet and secure residential area on a 30-acre Shree Swaminarayan Complex.
We operate under the auspices of Shree Kutchi Leva Patel Samaj (SKLPS) Uganda, and Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple (SKSST, Kampala. The school is incorporated as Shree Sahajanand School in the year 2022.
Duties and Responsibilities
Curriculum Development: Develop and implement curriculum materials, lesson plans, and instructional resources for teaching religious studies topics aligned with curriculum standards and educational objectives.
Instruction: Teach about religious beliefs, practices, rituals, symbols, sacred texts, historical developments, and contemporary issues in various religious traditions through lectures, discussions, readings, multimedia presentations, and experiential activities.
Interfaith Dialogue: Facilitate interfaith dialogue, respectful discussions, and exploration of religious diversity to foster understanding, empathy, and appreciation for different religious perspectives and traditions.
Scripture Study: Lead students in studying and analyzing religious scriptures, texts, and teachings from different religious traditions, emphasizing critical reading skills, interpretation, and contextual understanding.
Religious Ethics: Teach ethical principles, moral values, and ethical dilemmas in religious contexts, guiding students in ethical reasoning, moral decision-making, and ethical reflection.
Comparative Religion: Explore similarities and differences among religious traditions, theological concepts, religious rituals, and ethical teachings through comparative analysis and cross-cultural studies.
Religious History: Provide historical context and background information on the development of religious traditions, major events, key figures, and religious movements to deepen students' understanding of religious beliefs and practices.
Current Events and Issues: Discuss contemporary religious issues, social justice concerns, religious conflicts, religious freedom, and religious responses to global challenges to help students critically engage with real-world issues and apply religious teachings to modern contexts.
Spiritual Development: Support students' spiritual growth, personal reflection, and exploration of their own beliefs, values, and identity within a supportive and non-coercive learning environment.
Community Engagement: Encourage students to participate in religious and interfaith activities, service projects, community outreach initiatives, and religious observances to foster religious literacy, civic engagement, and social responsibility.
Qualifications and Competencies
Education: A bachelor's degree in Religious Studies, Theology, Philosophy, or a related field is typically required. Some institutions may prefer candidates with a master's degree or higher, especially for teaching at the high school or college level.
Teaching Certification: Many jurisdictions require teachers to obtain a teaching certification or license to teach in public schools. This often involves completing a teacher education program with a focus on religious education and passing relevant exams.
Subject Matter Knowledge: Demonstrated proficiency in various religious traditions, beliefs, practices, scriptures, ethics, and philosophical concepts is essential for religious studies teachers. They should have a deep understanding of world religions, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others.
Experience: While not always required, having teaching or professional experience in religious studies, theology, or related fields can strengthen a candidate's application. Experience working in religious institutions, community organizations, or interfaith dialogue initiatives is valuable.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary for effectively teaching religious studies and interacting with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.
Cross-cultural Competence: Sensitivity to cultural diversity, religious pluralism, and interfaith dialogue is important for creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment for students from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
Critical Thinking: Religious studies teachers should encourage critical thinking, open-mindedness, and respectful dialogue among students to explore religious beliefs, question assumptions, and analyze religious texts and teachings.
Ethical Awareness: Understanding of ethical principles, moral values, and ethical dilemmas in religious contexts is important for teaching ethics and guiding students in moral decision-making.
Continuing Education: Engaging in ongoing professional development activities, such as workshops, seminars, conferences, and religious studies conferences, is important for staying updated on current trends, religious scholarship, and pedagogical approaches in the field.
