Shree Sahajanand School, Uganda (SSSU) is a modern co-educational day learning institution offering pre-primary, primary, and secondary schooling to children on the National Curriculum.
Situated in the heart of Kampala City at Bukoto, Nakawa Division, SSSU is strategically built in a quiet and secure residential area on a 30-acre Shree Swaminarayan Complex.
We operate under the auspices of Shree Kutchi Leva Patel Samaj (SKLPS) Uganda, and Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple (SKSST, Kampala. The school is incorporated as Shree Sahajanand School in the year 2022.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction: Teach performing arts classes according to curriculum guidelines and lesson plans. Provide instruction in acting techniques, vocal performance, instrumental music, dance styles, and theatrical production.
Rehearsals and Performances: Direct rehearsals and stage productions, musical concerts, dance recitals, or theatrical performances. Coordinate casting, blocking, staging, music rehearsals, choreography, costume design, set construction, and technical elements.
Script Analysis and Interpretation: Guide students in analyzing scripts, interpreting characters, developing character motivations, and exploring dramatic themes and concepts.
Music Education: Teach music theory, sight-reading, ear training, and performance skills to students studying vocal or instrumental music. Conduct rehearsals with music ensembles, such as choirs, bands, orchestras, or chamber groups.
Choreography and Dance Instruction: Create original choreography or teach established dance routines to students. Lead dance classes, workshops, or rehearsals to develop dancers' technique, expression, and performance quality.
Technical Theatre: Teach technical theatre skills, including scenic design, lighting design, sound design, costume design, makeup, stage management, and backstage operations.
Critique and Feedback: Provide constructive criticism and feedback on students' performances through individual coaching sessions, group rehearsals, and post-performance evaluations. Encourage students to reflect on their artistic growth and areas for improvement.
Collaboration and Ensemble Building: Foster a collaborative and supportive environment where students work together as an ensemble to create theatrical productions or musical performances. Promote teamwork, communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Community Engagement: Engage with parents, community organizations, and external partners to showcase student performances, participate in arts festivals, and collaborate on community outreach projects.
Professionalism: Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with students, colleagues, parents, and community members. Uphold ethical standards, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to school policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Competencies
Education: A bachelor's degree in Performing Arts, Theatre Arts, Drama Education, Music Education, or a related field is typically required. Some institutions may prefer candidates with a master's degree, especially for teaching at the high school or college level.
Teaching Certification: Many jurisdictions require teachers to obtain a teaching certification or license to teach in public schools. This often involves completing a teacher education program with a focus on performing arts education and passing relevant exams.
Subject Matter Knowledge: Demonstrated proficiency in various performing arts disciplines, including acting, music, dance, and technical theatre, is essential for performing arts teachers. They should have a strong foundation in performance techniques, stagecraft, script analysis, musicality, choreography, and theatrical production.
Experience: While not always required, having teaching or professional experience in the performing arts field can strengthen a candidate's application. Experience directing or choreographing performances, conducting music ensembles, or coaching actors is valuable.
Audition: Many performing arts programs may require candidates to audition or present a portfolio of their work to demonstrate their artistic abilities and experience.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills are necessary for effectively teaching performing arts and interacting with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.
Collaboration Skills: Performing arts teachers should be able to collaborate effectively with other teachers, directors, musicians, choreographers, designers, and technicians to produce theatrical productions, musical performances, or dance showcases.
Technology Skills: Familiarity with audiovisual equipment, theatrical lighting, sound systems, digital music software, and video editing tools can enhance teaching and learning in the performing arts classroom and theatre productions.
Continuing Education: Engaging in ongoing professional development activities, such as workshops, seminars, conferences, master classes, and theatre festivals, is important for staying updated on current trends and practices in the performing arts field.
Background Check: Depending on the institution and location, a background check may be required to ensure the safety of students, especially for positions involving working with minors.
