Job Description
Reporting to the executive leadership, the Tax Director will oversee all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and strategy. The role requires a strong technical background in taxation, combined with leadership and advisory capabilities. The successful candidate will manage tax risks, engage with regulatory authorities, support audits, and ensure alignment of tax strategy with overall business objectives. The Tax Director will also work closely with cross-functional teams to optimize tax efficiency, advise on mergers and acquisitions, and provide insights into global tax implications.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and lead corporate tax strategies that support business objectives.
Ensure full compliance with Kenyan tax laws and international tax regulations.
Oversee preparation and filing of tax returns, assessments, and related statutory obligations.
Advise management on tax risks, opportunities, and the impact of evolving legislation.
Manage tax audits and liaise with external auditors, regulators, and tax authorities.
Provide strategic tax input on mergers, acquisitions, cross-border transactions, and restructuring.
Strengthen internal controls related to taxation and ensure compliance with corporate governance standards.
Lead, mentor, and build the capacity of the tax function within the organization.
Utilize ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Sage) and advanced Excel for reporting and compliance.
Produce data-driven tax reports and present insights to executive leadership.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field.
Postgraduate qualification (MBA, MSc in Taxation/Finance) preferred.
CPA-K or ACCA certification (mandatory).
Membership with ICPAK (Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya) required.
Additional certifications such as ADIT (Advanced Diploma in International Taxation), CFA, or CIMA are advantageous.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive tax experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
Proven experience in multinational corporations, Big Four firms, or large corporates.
Strong understanding of internal controls, audits, and financial reporting.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems.
Experience across multiple industries and jurisdictions is an added advantage.
