Job Description
Job Title: Shift Leader
Department: Production
Location: Uganda
Reports To: Production Specialist
Position Overview
ABACUS is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Shift Leader to oversee daily production operations during assigned shifts. The ideal candidate will ensure strict adherence to cGMP standards while optimizing productivity through Lean and Six Sigma principles. You will supervise operators and technicians, monitor production performance, ensure accurate documentation, and foster a high-performance culture of compliance, safety, and continuous improvement.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Production Oversight
Coordinate all production activities on shift to meet daily targets.
Allocate responsibilities and supervise production operators, technicians, and support staff.
Monitor critical parameters during BFS filling, dispensing, manufacturing, sterilization, and packaging.
Ensure proper execution of batch production records and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Identify and escalate equipment deviations or performance issues promptly.
GMP Compliance
Ensure full adherence to cGMP standards during production operations.
Review all shift documentation for accuracy and completeness.
Conduct hygiene and line clearance checks before each batch run.
Report and escalate non-conformities to the Production Specialist and QA team.
Contribute to waste reduction, yield improvement, and overall efficiency through Lean practices.
Team Leadership & Training
Supervise and mentor production team members, promoting accountability and discipline.
Support the onboarding and training of new operators on SOPs and cGMP protocols.
Lead shift briefings at the start and end of each shift to ensure smooth handover and communication.
Health, Safety & Environment
Promote a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with PPE and all safety guidelines.
Report incidents, near misses, or unsafe practices immediately.
Documentation & Reporting
Review and validate BMRs, cleaning records, and shift logs.
Track and report hourly outputs, downtimes, deviations, and quality issues.
Submit detailed and accurate shift reports to highlight performance, issues, and areas for improvement.
Authority
Supervise all production personnel during the assigned shift.
Approve minor machine adjustments within validated parameters.
Suspend operations if safety, product quality, or compliance is compromised.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education
Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Industrial/Mechanical/Production Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline.
Experience
3–5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably FMCG.
At least 1 year in a supervisory or team lead role.
Pharmaceutical or healthcare industry experience is an added advantage.
Technical Skills
Sound knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and equipment.
Strong grasp of cGMP, HACCP, ISO standards, and regulatory compliance.
Proficient in documentation practices and OEE tracking tools.
Familiarity with Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
Soft Skills & Attributes
Strong leadership and team management abilities.
High attention to detail and sense of accountability.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work under pressure and resolve conflicts effectively.
Flexible with work hours, including weekends, nights, or holidays.
