About the Organisation
Aquaya Institute is a non-profit research organization dedicated to improving water and sanitation services. Supported by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Aquaya partners with government agencies to help achieve 100% coverage of safe, sustainable, and equitable drinking water supplies in Uganda.
In rural areas, about 40% of handpumps—which provide drinking water to over half the population—are often non-functional. One major challenge is the limited capacity of communities to fund handpump maintenance. Research shows that Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) linked to reliable service providers significantly enhance communities’ ability to manage and finance handpump upkeep.
Aquaya is launching a randomized controlled trial in Kikuube District to evaluate how VSLAs affect water point functionality and preventive maintenance uptake. The study will involve up to 50 communities, with some establishing VSLAs dedicated to water fund management.
