Job Description
The Senior Data Scientist will design and manage rigorous tests and trials to enhance the effectiveness of UpEnergy’s interventions in clean cooking, safe water, and related climate-smart technologies. Responsibilities include conducting research, developing RCT strategies, documenting methodologies, analyzing data, and publishing results to influence the global clean energy conversation. The role requires collaboration with field teams, product units, and global researchers to ensure interventions are evidence-based and scalable. This is a dynamic, research-oriented position aimed at addressing energy poverty while advancing equitable climate solutions.

Lead research efforts on end-user behavior across multiple African markets.
Conduct literature reviews and remain updated on sectoral research.
Document methodologies, procedures, and findings for stakeholders.
Design, implement, and analyze RCTs and A/B testing frameworks.
Collaborate with product and in-country teams to identify research questions and hypotheses.
Support field teams in trial design, data collection, and high-quality implementation.
Collect, clean, and process experimental datasets.
Publish and present findings to contribute to global climate and clean cooking discussions.
Build a culture of experimentation within UpEnergy and partner organizations.
Ensure structured reporting of learnings to inform business decisions.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Data-Driven Marketing, or a related field.
Strong experience designing and implementing RCTs and A/B tests.
Proficiency with statistical software (Open Data Kit, Salesforce preferred).
Experience in retail or FMCG industries preferred.
Strong communication skills and ability to work with Sub-Saharan Africa field teams.
Demonstrated passion for climate justice and sustainable solutions in low-income contexts.
Based in Africa with fluency in English.
