Job Description
Position: Senior Data Scientist
Location: Remote (Hybrid)
Team: Data & Research
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist with a strong background in customer and market research, behavioral science, and impact evaluation—preferably within the retail or consumer products space. In this role, you will lead data-driven initiatives to enhance the design, testing, and evaluation of go-to-market strategies, products, and interventions. Your work will directly inform how we engage users, drive adoption, and scale effectively.
This is a critical position on our team that will enable us to continuously improve how we deliver clean energy technologies to households and communities across Africa—and beyond.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Research & Insights
Lead research to better understand user behavior across different markets.
Conduct literature reviews and stay updated on research related to clean cooking, safe water, and relevant domains.
Design and document rigorous experimental methodologies, especially RCTs (Randomized Controlled Trials).
Serve as principal investigator on research initiatives and collaborate with global academic partners.
Analyze RCT and pilot data to produce actionable insights and thought leadership in the sector.
Share findings with internal and external stakeholders, including through publications.
Experimentation & Testing
Design and implement tests to evaluate interventions, product usage, and communication strategies.
Develop and apply A/B testing frameworks and continuous optimization methods.
Work closely with field teams to ensure robust sampling, data collection, and protocol adherence.
Collaborate with product and in-country teams to identify relevant research questions.
Monitor data quality and lead audits to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Support design and execution of large-scale pilots and cost-efficient distribution strategies.
Build a culture of experimentation both internally and with partners like Community Carbon.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Marketing Analytics, or related field.
Experience designing and analyzing Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs).
Skilled in statistical software and tools (e.g., ODK, Salesforce).
Preferred experience in retail, FMCG, or appliance industries.
Strong communication skills and experience working with diverse teams, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Passionate about climate solutions, especially in low-income and underserved contexts.
Fluent in English.
Based in or with strong ties to Africa.
