Job Description
The Research Intern will contribute to strengthening climate resilience in Rwanda’s agricultural sector by conducting evidence-based research on crop suitability under changing climate conditions. This internship will involve developing a comprehensive study using down-scaled climate data, supporting the objectives of Rwanda’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and enhancing local research capacity. The role will include data analysis, coordination with national and international experts, literature reviews, reporting, and participation in knowledge-sharing sessions. This six-month engagement is designed to provide hands-on experience in applied research, data analysis, and climate impact assessment.

Conduct the study on the impacts of climate change on crop suitability using down-scaled climate data.
Develop and implement a work plan to complete the study within the internship period.
Collaborate with GIZ, Meteo Rwanda, and PIK experts to ensure scientific rigor.
Analyze climate and environmental data, apply crop suitability models, and interpret results.
Prepare progress reports and maintain proper research documentation.
Conduct literature reviews on crop suitability modelling and climate impact assessment in Rwanda.
Present interim and final results to stakeholders.
Contribute to knowledge-sharing and capacity-building activities.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education: Master’s degree (graduated within last 12 months or awaiting graduation) in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Climate Science, Geography, Natural Resource Management, Data Science, or related fields. Bachelor’s degree holders may also be considered.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis with programming skills in R or Python; knowledge of GIS and/or remote sensing is an asset.
Experience: Prior exposure to tropical agriculture, sustainable development, climate impact analysis, or quantitative research is desirable.
Competencies: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, organizational and time-management abilities, good written and verbal communication skills in English (French is an advantage), ability to work independently and in multicultural teams.
