Job Description

Based at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus (Kinigi, Musanze), the Research Assistant spends 3–4 days weekly in the field and 1–2 days in the office. The role collects demographic and behavioral data, enters and quality-checks datasets (behavioral, GPS/CyberTracker, anti-poaching), assists with photogrammetry and image databases, produces tables/maps for monthly reports, and participates in team meetings, education/outreach, conferences, and scientific publications. The RA collaborates closely with trackers, data technicians, and conservation staff and may represent DFGF in external forums.

How to Apply

  • Collect demographic & behavioral long-term data; supervise/verify field data from trackers/data technicians.

  • Enter, manage, and curate research datasets (behavioral, GPS, CyberTracker, anti-poaching); ensure data quality.

  • Participate in photogrammetry tasks (image/data collection, measurements, reporting); maintain photo databases.

  • Spend 3–4 days/week in the field; 1–2 days/week office-based for data entry, analysis, and reporting.

  • Prepare weekly activity reports; contribute to monthly reports (tables, charts, maps).

  • Join research team meetings; support education/outreach activities in Rwanda.

  • Contribute to DFGF magazine and peer-reviewed publications; attend regional conferences as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor’s in Primatology, Biology, Zoology, Anthropology, Wildlife Conservation, or related field.

  • Master’s preferred (primate research/conservation biology focus an advantage).

  • Training in animal behavior/wildlife monitoring/ethology/primate ecology is a plus.

Experience

  • 1–2 years in primate research, wildlife fieldwork, or behavioral ecology.

  • Experience with habituated great apes (gorillas/chimpanzees) highly desirable.

  • Fieldwork in tropical/montane forests an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Behavioral data methods (focal/scan sampling); GPS, binoculars, rangefinders, data loggers.

  • Data/analysis tools: R, Excel; behavioral coding tools (e.g., BORIS).

  • Familiarity with gorilla health indicators and non-invasive health monitoring.

Soft Skills & Other Abilities

  • Excellent observation, accuracy, and attention to detail; strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.

  • Physically fit for long hikes in steep/rugged terrain; resilience in challenging field conditions.

  • Fluent in English; Kinyarwanda and/or French are strong assets.

  • Commitment to conservation ethics, animal welfare, and DFGF values.

  • Willingness to live/work in remote field stations for extended periods.
