Job Description
The Research Assistant plays a vital role in field research activities by assisting in qualitative and quantitative data collection, ensuring ethical practices, and supporting data quality control. Responsibilities include administering surveys, organizing research logistics, transcribing and translating data, and maintaining proper documentation. The role also involves direct engagement with communities and stakeholders to ensure respectful, informed participation in all research efforts. The Research Assistant reports findings and challenges to supervisors and supports data analysis activities.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Field Research Support
Assist with surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observations.
Support participant mobilization, scheduling, and consent procedures.
Data Collection & Quality Control
Use tools such as KoboToolbox, ODK, or SurveyCTO to collect data.
Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and validity.
Report data issues, ethical concerns, or inconsistencies promptly.
Documentation & Analysis Support
Transcribe and translate interviews and group discussions.
Assist in coding, cleaning, and data entry for analysis.
Maintain secure records of all research documents.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
Engage communities respectfully, especially on sensitive topics (e.g., gender-based violence, displacement).
Clearly explain research objectives and obtain informed consent.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Statistics, Public Health, or related field.
Prior experience in data collection or research is an asset.
Proficiency in using digital data tools (KoboToolbox, ODK, etc.).
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to translate and transcribe accurately.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Respect for confidentiality, ethics, and humanitarian principles.
Ability to work in rural and emergency settings.
