Job Description

Job Title:   Project Manager FRECAR

Duty Station:  Kampala, Uganda

Job Summary: 

The Project Manager FRECAR will manage the project’s programs, financial and human resources, to ensure the degradation of natural forests in the Kagombe – Bugoma Landscape is halted and regenerated while livelihoods of adjacent communities are improved and are resilient to climate change.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Engage with relevant structures around carbon emissions programs/REDD+ programmes in the country (at national and sub-national level).

  • In collaboration with the Energy and Climate Program of WWF UCO, develop and popularize a mechanism of registering and monitoring projects contributing to NDC fulfillment.

  • Support NFA to develop and implement the management plans for Bugoma, Kagombe, Kitechura and associated forest reserves.

  • Support NFA in the demarcation of the Bugoma, Kagombe and Kitechura with both pillars and belts of indigenous tree species.

  • Support the Afforestation, Reforestation and regeneration initiatives in the degraded compartments of Kagombe and Bugoma CFRs.

  • Familiarize with and Popularize the CCB and VCS carbon standards among WWF staff and all implementing stakeholders.

  • Support data collection to regularly update the carbon models working closely with NFA and external carbon consultants.

  • Strengthen collaborative forest management groups to conserve the forests and reduce dependence by adopting economically viable nature-based enterprises.

  • Support establishment of commercial plantations in communities adjacent to Bugoma and Kagombe to reduce pressure on the forest reserves in the future.

  • Work with RHU to adopt and popularize the Population Health and Environment

  • approaches among the forest adjacent communities and improve their climate resilience as well as health of humans and nature

  • Strengthen the management of privately owned natural forests.

  • Develop business cases for the viable nature-based enterprises (incl. plantations)

  • established and link them to the value chain players such as private sector.

  • Engage youth and women to adopt climate adaptation interventions that improve their resilience, incomes and food security.

  • Support technical, institutional and financial capacity building of the partners that include NFA, Districts, and Civil society organizations to ensure sustainability of the carbon accounting systems.

  • Plan and oversee the use of the project budget and ensure delivery of outputs in an efficient and effective manner justifying value for money at all times.

  • Mainstream pro-people conservation approaches in line with WWFs SD4C/ESSF policies on conservation and livelihood, human rights-based approaches, gender, conflict resolution among others.

  • Improve organization and program visibility through high quality, documentation, documentaries, branding mechanisms , participation in relevant partner events, acting with integrity at all times.

  • Perform any other duties as requested by supervisors at WWF from time to time

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry , Environmental Studies, Wildlife management, or a related discipline.

  • Masters in relevant field is preferred.

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience in forestry management, NRM, or conservation management. Experience in Forest Carbon projects and the CCB/VCS standard is an added advantage.

  • Expertise in CSO governance, mentoring, group management and dynamics, and/or training.

  • Track record of developing and delivering community based natural resources management projects.

  • Demonstrable experience engaging with government, private sector and civil society at all levels.

  • Experience of working with international organizations.

  • Experience working local government and the local communities.

  • Familiarity with National Forest Authority, Ministry of Trade, FSSD, National Environment Management Authority, Ministry of Water and Environment, Department for Climate Change is desired.

  • Experience with the NDC process in Uganda is an advantage.

  • English fluency required; conversational level ability to speak one or more local languages is preferred.

Required Skills

  • Strong project management skills with experience in project planning, financial management, reporting and evaluation (for projects above USD 2million);

  • Strong financial management skills and good knowledge of excel.

  • Strong report writing skills.

  • Ability to think laterally and creatively.

  • Strong communication and advocacy skills, (written and verbal), with ability to present, persuade, influence and negotiate at all levels.

  • Ability to convey the work of WWF with confidence and credibility.

  • Good team player with the ability to also work well under own initiative.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.

  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
