Job Description
The Paralegal will work closely with a team of five lawyers and one other paralegal under the Legal Counsel. The role will include drafting reports for regulators, boards, and law enforcement authorities, assisting senior lawyers on compliance issues related to sanctions, export controls, terrorist financing, and aid diversion risks, and providing paralegal support for broader compliance projects. This includes policy updates, research, and administrative support. The position requires close collaboration with internal teams, including Safeguarding, Fraud, and Safety & Security, to ensure SCI continues to deliver aid in compliance with regulations and donor requirements.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Review and assess incidents for reporting under UK Charity Commission guidelines.
Draft serious incident reports for regulators, the Board, and law enforcement.
Support senior lawyers on compliance with sanctions, export controls, and terrorist financing.
Assist with fraud, bribery, corruption, anti-money laundering, modern slavery, and data protection compliance projects.
Draft, update, and maintain compliance policies and documents.
Conduct legal research and other ad-hoc paralegal tasks.
Ensure timely, accurate, and confidential handling of sensitive information.
Prepare presentations and analysis on incident trends.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Graduate-level education (essential).
Experience & Skills (Essential):
Strong legal judgment, research, and analytical skills.
Understanding of compliance risks in international organisations.
High organisational skills with ability to prioritise under pressure.
Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Ability to liaise effectively across cultures with discretion and diplomacy.
Desirable:
Experience in an NGO or other international organisation.
