Job Description
The Operating Theatre Nurse supervises, trains, and works alongside national staff in theatre activities (scrub, running nurse roles) and in sterilisation services. They are responsible for preparation, participation in surgeries, sterilisation quality control, stock management, local staff training, clinical record keeping, and ensuring compliance with hospital protocols. Assignments are available at EMERGENCY’s Centres in Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Uganda, all of which operate at an international standard of excellence.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Management and supervision of sterilisation services
Preparation of operating theatres and organisation of national theatre teams
Direct participation in surgical procedures as a scrub nurse or anaesthesia nurse
Management and ordering of stocks and supplies
Assistance in clinical research and record keeping
Training and capacity building for national staff
Quality control of sterilisation processes (steam and chemical sterilisation)
Ensuring adherence to hospital admissions criteria, clinical guidelines, and protocols
Supporting scientific and clinical programs by the Medical Division of EMERGENCY
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Degree in Nursing (or equivalent diploma) and current registration on the professional nursing register
Minimum of 3 years' continuous professional experience in Emergency Surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, Cardiac Surgery (including Paediatric), or Paediatric Surgery as a scrub or anaesthesia nurse
Good knowledge of English (minimum B1 level, Europass framework)
Strong experience in sterilisation procedures and operating theatre management
Ability to supervise and train staff effectively
Commitment to 6 months’ overseas stay
