Job Description
Job Opportunity: Laboratory Technician (1 Position)
Organization: Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI)
Location: Kampala, Uganda
Department: Meningitis Research Team
Duration: 4 Months (Locum)
Reports To: Study Coordinator
Project Background
The Meningitis Research Team at IDI is actively running four key studies in Kampala, aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment for adult meningitis cases. These include:
COAST Study – An observational cohort study examining the causes and outcomes of adult meningitis.
PLATFORM-CM Trial – A randomized, open-label trial evaluating the safety and effectiveness of new antifungal therapies compared to standard WHO-recommended treatments.
To support ongoing research efforts, we are seeking a Locum Laboratory Technician to join the team.
Position Summary
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for sample collection, processing, analysis, and documentation according to study protocols. The role will also involve supporting laboratory quality assurance, equipment maintenance, and contributing to the overall success of the research team.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Sample Handling & Testing
Collect and transport biological samples from wards/clinics to designated labs with completed request forms and checklists.
Perform laboratory tests including CSF analysis, microbial cultures, and molecular diagnostics (e.g., CSF and urine GeneXpert Ultra).
Prepare and store samples in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the Meningitis Diagnostic Laboratory.
Provide point-of-care test results and ensure timely reporting to clinicians.
Quality Control & Documentation
Ensure adherence to lab quality standards and protocols.
Participate in equipment calibration and maintenance activities.
Maintain accurate records for sample storage and facilitate proper packaging and shipment when needed.
Complete lab forms, checklists, and ensure Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) compliance.
Team Collaboration
Attend all study team meetings to discuss patient care, lab operations, and ongoing study progress.
Support additional tasks as assigned by the Study Coordinator.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
Must be a licensed laboratory technician with a valid practicing license.
Experience & Skills
Experience working in a clinical trial setting is an added advantage.
Proficiency in CSF microbiology techniques.
Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to laboratory quality standards.
