Job Description
Lira University was established as a Public University by Statutory Instrument No.35, of July 18th 2015 to expand access to equitable quality Higher Education in the country and to respond to the critical Human Resource Development needs of the country. The University is governed by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 as amended 2006 of the Republic of Uganda. The University is located in Lango Sub-region in Northern Uganda, Lira City. In order to fulfill the current mandate and to position the University to assist local community and build their capacity for socio economic enhancement, the university has to fill positions with personnel with required skills and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lab Setup and Maintenance:
Prepare laboratory equipment, materials, and chemicals for experiments or demonstrations.
Set up and organize workstations, ensuring they are clean, safe, and properly equipped.
Maintain inventory of supplies, ordering new materials as needed and ensuring proper storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
Assistance with Experiments:
Assist laboratory instructors, researchers, or scientists in conducting experiments, demonstrations, or research projects.
Follow established protocols and procedures, accurately measuring and mixing chemicals, preparing solutions, and performing basic laboratory techniques.
Operate laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and pipettes under supervision.
Data Collection and Analysis:
Record observations, measurements, and experimental data accurately and systematically.
Assist with data entry, analysis, and interpretation using computer software or other tools as directed.
Prepare graphs, charts, or reports summarizing experimental results for review by supervising personnel.
Lab Safety and Compliance:
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, and emergency protocols.
Conduct routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and safety.
Report any safety hazards, incidents, or equipment malfunctions to supervising personnel promptly.
Assistance to Students or Researchers:
Provide guidance and support to students, researchers, or other laboratory users, answering questions and offering assistance as needed.
Demonstrate proper laboratory techniques and procedures, ensuring understanding and compliance with safety protocols.
Assist with the setup and cleanup of laboratory experiments, ensuring efficient use of time and resources.
Qualifications and Competencies
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Some positions may prefer or require additional education, such as coursework in science, biology, chemistry, or a related field.
Experience:
Previous experience working in a laboratory environment is beneficial but not always required. Relevant coursework, internships, or on-the-job training may suffice.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques, such as pipetting, dilutions, microscopy, and data recording.
Familiarity with laboratory equipment and instrumentation commonly used in the specific field or discipline.
Basic computer skills for data entry, analysis, and use of laboratory software or applications.
Attention to Detail:
Ability to follow detailed instructions precisely and accurately, ensuring consistency and reliability in experimental procedures and data recording.
Strong observational skills and attention to detail to recognize and report any deviations, anomalies, or unexpected results.
Communication Skills:
Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with supervising personnel, colleagues, and laboratory users.
Ability to convey information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Safety Awareness:
Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, including proper handling of chemicals, biological materials, and hazardous substances.
Commitment to following safety procedures and promoting a culture of safety in the laboratory.
Teamwork and Collaboration:
Ability to work collaboratively with others in a laboratory setting, following instructions from supervisors and supporting colleagues as needed.
Willingness to contribute to the overall success of the laboratory and assist with various tasks as required.
Reliability and Professionalism:
Dependability and punctuality in fulfilling assigned duties and responsibilities.
Professional demeanor, including adherence to dress code, ethical standards, and confidentiality requirements.
