Job Description
Job Opportunity: Head of Finance
Organization: Every Life Uganda
Location: Uganda
Reports To: Country Director
Indirectly Reports To: Head of Finance, UK
The Head of Finance plays a key leadership role, overseeing financial operations and ensuring sustainability. This includes managing financial systems to ensure accuracy, transparency, and compliance with donor guidelines, Ugandan laws, and international accounting standards.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership
Develop and implement financial strategies in alignment with the organization’s mission.
Identify, assess, and mitigate financial and operational risks, including fraud.
Provide financial forecasting and risk analysis to the National Executive Team.
Advise on major investment and financial decisions.
Budgeting & Planning
Lead the annual budgeting process, coordinating with local and international teams.
Monitor budget performance and provide regular updates.
Work with program teams to align budgets with project goals.
Financial Management & Reporting
Prepare bi-monthly financial reports for the International Executive Team on both restricted and unrestricted funds.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, IFRS, and donor requirements.
Oversee cash flow management and bank reconciliations.
Review and approve monthly financial requisitions aligned with the approved budget.
Approve expenditures supported by appropriate documentation.
Conduct site visits to ensure compliance with financial policies and offer support where needed.
Regularly engage with staff to foster communication and problem-solving.
Review monthly reports including NSSF, PAYE, and petty cash reports.
Oversee the proper accounting and management of EL-Uganda’s assets.
Compliance & Audit
Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including the Uganda Revenue Authority and NGO Board.
Coordinate internal and external audits and implement findings.
Maintain and enhance internal control systems in line with Every Life International standards.
Donor Relations & Grant Management
Assist in preparing donor financial reports and funding proposals.
Monitor grant utilization and ensure funds are disbursed and used as intended.
Establish systems for budgeting, monitoring, and reporting aligned with donor agreements.
Team Leadership
Manage and mentor the finance team, promoting a culture of integrity and accountability.
Build organizational financial literacy through training and ongoing support.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Academic Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Finance or MBA with a focus on Accounting/Finance.
Full ACCA or CPA qualification.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years in financial management, including at least 3 years at a senior level.
Strong understanding of Ugandan financial regulations and donor compliance.
Experience managing donor-funded NGO programs is preferred.
Key Competencies
Proficiency with financial software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel.
High standards of integrity and professionalism.
Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and decision-making skills.
Self-motivated and innovative.
Proven leadership and capacity-building experience.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Comfortable working in slum communities and diverse cultural settings.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
