Department: Estates
Job Purpose
The Fire Safety Technician will play a vital role in ensuring fire safety across all MRC Uganda field stations. Working under the Estates Department, the Technician will support electrical maintenance and be actively involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and compliance oversight of fire alarm systems and emergency safety measures. This role is key to maintaining a safe working environment for staff, students, and visitors.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Fire Safety Operations & Maintenance
Design, install, commission, and test new fire alarm systems and ensure compliance with standards
Maintain and test fire detection systems, panels, alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and suppression systems
Respond to fire alarms and incidents, identify faults, and perform urgent repairs
Conduct routine fire drills and collaborate with the Health & Safety team to define emergency protocols and assembly points
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure systems meet ISO Quality, British Standards (BS), and applicable Ugandan safety regulations
Maintain up-to-date reports on fire system installations, maintenance, and inspections
Coordinate with Uganda Police, UCCA, and local emergency response services for fire-related interventions
Review and contribute to building fire risk assessments
Training & Capacity Building
Train staff, contractors, security teams, and fire wardens on installed systems and emergency response protocols
Provide fire safety briefings to new staff and visitors
Support the development and implementation of fire safety policies
Collaboration & Support
Liaise with the Health & Safety team on all fire-related matters
Support contract management and oversee service providers to ensure compliance with fire safety standards
Provide performance data and system insights to the Maintenance Electrical Engineer and relevant departments
Participate in on-call rotation for emergency responses
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from a recognized institution
Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in fire protection system installation, maintenance, and commissioning
Strong background in electrical/electronic systems and troubleshooting
Key Skills & Competencies
Proficiency in fire alarm systems (conventional & addressable), emergency lighting, and inverter systems
Familiarity with CAD and MS Office software
Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and technical specifications
Understanding of HSE principles and risk mitigation
Valid driver’s license (motorcycle license is an added advantage)
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage conflict
High attention to safety, compliance, and customer service
