About the Organisation
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is a semi-autonomous institution, established in May 1995, as the principal agency in Uganda, charged with the responsibility of coordinating, monitoring, regulating and supervising environmental management in the country.
NEMA spearheads the development of environmental policies, laws, regulations, standards and guidelines; and guides Government on sound environment management in Uganda. In doing this, NEMA contributes to social-economic development and wise use of natural resources, focusing on providing support to Government’s main goal of ensuring sustainable development contributing to the National Vision, the National Development Plan (NDP), regional and global commitments including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Summary
The Environment Protection Officer will support the protection and preservation of Uganda’s environment by conducting surveillance, preventing environmental crimes, and assisting in enforcement activities. This role demands dedication to safeguarding ecosystems and natural resources while ensuring compliance with environmental laws.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Conduct surveillance and field operations to prevent environmental degradation and crimes.
Detect, arrest, and support prosecution of offenders engaged in activities harmful to the environment.
Provide security for the environment, NEMA property, staff, and visitors within operational areas.
Collect, record, and report field data to inform management decisions.
Operate communication radios and relay timely information as assigned.
Gather and disseminate intelligence related to environmental threats and encroachment.
Monitor critical ecosystems and resources, actively deterring encroachment and degradation.
Assist in environmental monitoring, inspections, research, and audits when required.
Support environmental awareness and education initiatives.
Prepare and submit accurate and timely operational reports.
Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Honors Bachelor’s Degree in Environment and Natural Resources, Natural Science, Law, Criminology, or related fields from a recognized institution.
Willingness to undergo para-military training lasting not less than six months.
Competencies and Skills
Proven physical and medical fitness to operate under demanding field conditions.
High integrity, accountability, and strong ethical standards.
Ability to work effectively within a team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong time management and organizational abilities.
Eligibility Requirements
Must be a Ugandan adult citizen with a valid National Identity Card.
Must be healthy, physically fit, and able to pass medical and physical endurance tests, including a road run.
Must have good conduct with no criminal record.
Must be willing to undergo mandatory para-military training.
Submission of false documents will lead to disqualification and legal prosecution.
