Job Description
The Driver will be responsible for the secure and timely transportation of goods, patients, and personnel in accordance with Medical Teams International’s fleet management policies and Uganda's road safety regulations. The driver will ensure the roadworthiness and cleanliness of the vehicle, document trips, identify mechanical issues, and provide emergency support when required. This role requires travel up to 100%, often in remote and rugged environments.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Drive MTI vehicles following fleet management policies and Ugandan traffic laws.
Support nurses in emergency scenarios, including administering first aid.
Perform vehicle inspections, identify mechanical issues, and alert the supervisor.
Transport the vehicle for approved maintenance and servicing.
Maintain and submit weekly vehicle logs and inspection reports.
Ensure fuel levels are adequate for all trips.
Confirm use of safety belts and compliance with safety protocols.
Oversee loading/unloading of goods and validate delivery documents.
Confirm travel documents for all passengers.
Keep the vehicle clean and tidy at all times.
Monitor and report on emergency supplies and first aid kits.
Follow emergency response protocols and file accident reports when needed.
Ensure availability of valid vehicle and driver documents.
Participate in all required safety and defensive driving trainings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education and Certifications:
Minimum of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE – O’ Level)
Valid Class DL driving license (additional classes are an asset)
Defensive driving certification is required
First Aid and CPR certification is an added advantage
Mechanical/vehicle maintenance training is an added advantage
Experience:
At least 5 years of driving experience, preferably with an international NGO
Experience driving ambulances or emergency vehicles is an advantage
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong understanding of road safety regulations and defensive driving
Basic mechanical and vehicle maintenance knowledge
Ability to stay calm and prioritize in emergencies
Skilled in basic first aid and CPR
Excellent recordkeeping and reporting skills
High level of professionalism, punctuality, and courtesy
Physical fitness for loading/offloading and long-distance driving
Willingness to work in remote and challenging environments
