Job Description

We are currently seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals with the right skills, knowledge, and attitude to join our team. We invite applications from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill the following vacancy at the NMS Head Office.

Job Title: Database Administrator
Job Grade: Grade 06
Number of Positions: 01

The Database Administrator (DBA) will be responsible for the effective and efficient management of National Medical Stores’ (NMS) databases. This includes ensuring the performance, integrity, security, and availability of the organization’s databases. The DBA will support the design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems to ensure optimal performance and data accessibility.

    • Administer and maintain NMS databases, ensuring optimal performance, security, and data integrity.

    • Install, configure, and upgrade database management systems.

    • Perform routine database maintenance tasks, including backups, restores, and data migration.

  2. Database Security:

    • Implement and manage database security policies and procedures to safeguard data from unauthorized access.

    • Monitor and audit database access and usage to detect any potential security risks or vulnerabilities.

  3. Performance Monitoring and Optimization:

    • Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize queries to ensure high efficiency.

    • Analyze and fine-tune database queries and indexes to improve system performance.

  4. Troubleshooting and Support:

    • Provide troubleshooting support for database-related issues and resolve them in a timely manner.

    • Offer technical support to users and other departments in relation to database systems and queries.

  5. Backup and Recovery:

    • Plan and implement a robust database backup and disaster recovery strategy to protect data.

    • Ensure that backup procedures are carried out regularly and that data can be recovered when required.

  6. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate documentation on database systems, configurations, and maintenance activities.

    • Prepare reports on database performance, backup status, and security compliance.

  7. Database Design and Development:

    • Assist in database design, including data modeling and ensuring the integrity and normalization of data.

    • Work with developers to create efficient and scalable databases for new and existing applications.

  8. Training and Knowledge Sharing:

    • Provide training and guidance to staff on proper database usage and best practices.

    • Keep up to date with the latest trends and technologies in database management and recommend improvements.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Professional certification in database management (e.g., Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL) is an advantage.

  • At least 3 years of experience in database administration, preferably in an enterprise environment.

  • Strong knowledge of database management systems and cloud-based database solutions.

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong understanding of database security practices and disaster recovery techniques.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Familiarity with scripting and automation tools is a plus.
