Job Description

Job Title: Cyber Security Officer

Location: Uganda

Reports to: Head of IT

Role Overview

The Cyber Security Officer is responsible for implementing and maintaining robust cyber security measures to protect the bank’s information systems and data. This role involves monitoring, enforcing, and operationalizing Yako Bank’s cyber security strategies, policies, and procedures to defend against cyber threats and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Implement and monitor the bank’s Cyber Security Strategy and ensure alignment with IT architecture and security goals.

  • Manage security systems and tools such as firewalls, endpoint protection, encryption, vulnerability scanners, and penetration testing tools.

  • Continuously monitor systems and networks for suspicious activities, malware, or unauthorized access.

  • Evaluate and implement upgrades to the IT security environment, ensuring minimal disruption and strong performance.

  • Develop and enforce identity and access management policies to control data access.

  • Deliver IT security awareness training to staff and IT personnel.

  • Support internal and external IT audits, ensuring all findings are addressed and compliance is maintained.

  • Manage incident and change management in accordance with IT policies and procedures.

  • Identify risks, propose treatment plans, and manage threat and vulnerability processes.

  • Guide incident response efforts, including root cause analysis and mitigation plans.

  • Ensure compliance with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) and other applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with IT teams on security considerations for new systems, hardware, applications, and third-party integrations.

  • Maintain a knowledge base of cyber security trends, best practices, and regulatory changes.

  • Contribute to the development and execution of annual IT security budgets and work plans.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Additional certifications in Systems, Networks, or Databases are desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in IT security roles, preferably within financial institutions, government, telecoms, or consulting firms.

  • Prior experience in IT roles such as network administration, systems analysis, IT auditing, or risk analysis.

Certifications (Added Advantage):

  • CISSP, CEH, CISA, CISM, CCSP, MSCE, NSE, CCNA, CCNP, etc.


Key Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Sound knowledge of the Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019).

  • Familiarity with security frameworks like ISO27001/2, COBIT, NIST, and PCI DSS.

  • Analytical problem-solving skills related to security risk and compliance.

  • Experience with vulnerability assessment, control testing, and digital security strategies.

  • Knowledge of UNIX/Linux, Microsoft Servers, virtual environments, and intrusion detection systems.

  • Awareness of modern banking technology trends and security automation.
