Position Summary

As the Country Director for Uganda, you will serve as the organization's senior-most representative in the country—responsible for strategic leadership, program excellence, donor engagement, and operational performance. This role requires an entrepreneurial leader with a track record of growing country portfolios, building strategic alliances, and driving sustainable impact.

You will lead a diverse team while strengthening national and community partnerships, securing high-value grants, and scaling innovative, locally led development programs that align with ChildFund’s global mission. The position also plays a key role in advancing advocacy, safeguarding, risk management, and organizational learning.

  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing team.

  • Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, accountability, and inclusion.

  • Promote youth leadership development within the office and partner organizations.

5. External Representation & Advocacy

  • Represent ChildFund with key stakeholders including donors, government bodies, media, and INGOs.

  • Advocate for children’s and youth issues at national and international forums.

6. Resource Mobilization & Fundraising

  • Lead efforts to grow the funding base through strategic donor engagement, corporate partnerships, and local philanthropy.

7. Operational Oversight

  • Ensure efficient and accountable use of financial, human, and physical resources.

  • Collaborate with global shared services teams for support in finance, HR, and IT.

8. Governance & Compliance

  • Maintain robust governance systems and compliance with all legal, donor, and internal policies.

  • Promote a culture of transparency, integrity, and accountability.

9. Knowledge Management & Learning

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, adaptive programming, and evidence-driven decision-making.

  • Facilitate knowledge-sharing and learning exchanges across regions.

10. Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Lead emergency planning and responses to disasters impacting children and communities.

11. Safety, Security & Well-being

  • Ensure a secure and safe work environment for staff and program participants.

  • Promote mental health and well-being initiatives and adhere to global safety protocols.

12. Safeguarding

  • Uphold and model ChildFund’s safeguarding standards and lead proactive risk management.

  • Ensure immediate action and accountability in response to violations.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Master’s preferred).

  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years in senior leadership or management roles in the development or humanitarian sectors.

  • Strong experience managing institutional grants and engaging individual donors.

  • Demonstrated success in securing diverse funding streams (60%+ business development effort expected).

  • Experience in both emergency and community development programming.


Key Competencies & Skills

  • Fluency in English with excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • In-depth understanding of Uganda’s child protection landscape and development context.

  • Proven leadership in team building, strategic planning, and partnership development.

  • Strong fundraising skills and a business-oriented mindset.

  • Familiarity with youth empowerment, child safeguarding, gender inclusion, and adaptive programming.

  • High cultural sensitivity, integrity, and professionalism.
