Position Overview

GAHP is seeking a strategic, creative, and results-oriented Communication Officer to lead the external communications of the Environmental Pollution Program (EPP) in Uganda. You will play a key role in amplifying the program’s impact, increasing public awareness, and driving engagement among stakeholders through compelling storytelling, media outreach, and digital communication.

This role supports multiple initiatives, including:

  • Health and Pollution Action Plan (HPAP): Collaborating with stakeholders to identify and address Uganda’s pollution challenges.

  • Policy Analysis: Reviewing national waste management and agricultural policies with an emphasis on Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) and health.

  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Supporting a civil society coalition, led by YADNET, to advocate for clean air and healthy environments.

  • Research Communications: Sharing findings from a study on traffic-related air pollution in Kampala, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Makerere University.

How to Apply

1. Strategic Communication & Content Creation (60%)

  • Develop and execute a communications plan aligned with EPP objectives, in coordination with GAHP’s global team.

  • Create and edit content such as press releases, blog posts, newsletters, factsheets, and social media updates to highlight project milestones and impact.

  • Translate technical documents and research into engaging, accessible formats for policy audiences and the general public.

  • Ensure all messaging reflects GEDSI principles.

  • Collaborate with YADNET to craft messaging for civil society campaigns.

  • Prepare content for stakeholder events and donor outreach.

2. Media & Stakeholder Engagement (25%)

  • Build relationships with Ugandan media outlets to increase visibility for GAHP’s work.

  • Identify strategic opportunities for media coverage at national and regional levels.

  • Support media briefings, public events, and awareness campaigns.

  • Draft talking points, speeches, and presentations for project spokespersons.

3. Internal Coordination & Reporting (15%)

  • Work closely with the GAHP Program Manager, Uganda National Coordinator, and GEDSI Expert to align communication efforts.

  • Coordinate with the global Communications Manager and contribute to broader GAHP campaigns.

  • Track deliverables and deadlines; prepare updates and content for donor reports.

  • Provide editorial support on project materials as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public health, international relations, or a related field. (Master’s degree is an advantage.)

  • At least 5 years of experience in communications, media relations, or public engagement, ideally within NGOs or international development.

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills (submission of writing samples is required).

  • Proven ability to communicate complex or technical topics in clear, engaging language.

  • Experience with environment, health, pollution, or GEDSI topics is highly desirable.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, and communication tools such as Mailchimp, Canva, and social media scheduling platforms.

  • Solid understanding of Uganda’s media and development landscape.

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a remote setting.

  • Fluent in English; knowledge of local Ugandan languages is a plus.


Working Conditions & Compensation

  • This is a remote position. Applicants must be based in Uganda and have reliable internet access.

  • Occasional in-country travel may be required for events or field visits.

  • Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
