The Role
We’re seeking a Chief of Staff to support the VP of Programs and broader senior leadership in driving strategic, high-impact initiatives across our country offices. This role is ideal for a systems thinker who thrives in complex environments, excels at operational execution, and is excited to build internal structures that make it easier to deliver impact at scale.
You’ll act as a force multiplier: creating clarity, solving high-leverage challenges, and leading critical projects that cut across teams.
Location & Working Hours
Preferred base: Kampala, with strong preference for Nairobi, Lilongwe, Kigali, Maputo, or Goma
Working hours: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM EAT
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
1. Build Scalable Systems & Processes
Map current workflows across countries and departments
Design and implement streamlined, fit-for-purpose systems
Develop documentation, templates, and tools to enhance coordination and resource allocation
2. Optimize Departmental Effectiveness
Support decision-making, manage competing priorities, and streamline operations
Prepare briefing materials, presentations, and data analysis
Ensure alignment and follow-through on top-priority initiatives
3. Lead Special Projects
Own high-stakes, cross-functional initiatives (e.g., work plan templates, process mapping, coordination frameworks)
Drive harmonization and consistency across country offices
4. Manage Operating Rhythms
Lead and facilitate key departmental meetings and retreats
Own goal-tracking systems and remove execution bottlenecks
Conduct regular surveys to identify priorities and challenges
5. Oversee Internal Communications
Manage communications strategy for programs leadership
Ensure timely, transparent, and values-aligned updates across global teams
6. Travel
Approximately once per quarter, or as needed
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Experience & Skills
8+ years in roles such as:
Management consulting
Operations or strategy in low-resource or last-mile contexts
Organizational design or cross-country project management
Proven track record managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects
Strong understanding of working in Sub-Saharan Africa
Capabilities
Operates effectively with high ambiguity
Highly organized, thrives in fast-paced, high-stakes environments
Skilled at communication, influence, and managing across cultures
Strong analytical skills (data synthesis, strategic judgment)
Proficiency with:
Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
Slack, Asana, Jira (or similar tools)
Exceptional writing and presentation skills

Familiarity with cash transfer programs
Experience with Salesforce
Compensation
GiveDirectly benchmarks salaries at the 75th percentile of similar roles in the sector and region, using third-party compensation data. We have a no-negotiation policy to ensure equity across our team.
U.S. base salary: $128,000
Kenya base salary: $101,221
UK base salary: £87,500
Salaries for other locations will be benchmarked and shared during the hiring process.
