Job Purpose
Old Mutual Uganda is looking for a proactive and results-driven Business Development Officer – Direct Business to lead initiatives that drive growth in our General Insurance (GI) portfolio. This role involves developing and managing new and existing direct distribution channels, preparing tenders and proposals, building strategic partnerships, and ensuring seamless execution of business acquisition activities.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, customer-focused, and has a strong grasp of sales, relationship management, and business development best practices.

How to Apply
Business Development & Growth
Identify, develop, and roll out new distribution channels in collaboration with the Strategy & Innovation Manager (e.g., mobile channels, e-platforms, retail centers, agency networks).
Prepare and submit tenders, proposals, and bids for new and renewal business in GI – including direct, brokered, agency, and medical lines.
Maintain and monitor a pipeline for both new and renewal business, ensuring timely follow-ups and conversion.
Build and maintain relationships with intermediaries, clients, and business partners to grow the GI portfolio.
Represent Old Mutual at client meetings, pitch sessions, and business forums.
Tender & Proposal Management
Source and analyze Request for Quotations (RFQs) and tender opportunities aligned with the company’s products and services.
Coordinate preparation of bid documents, ensuring compliance with tender requirements and deadlines.
Attend pre-bid meetings and handle client correspondence throughout the bidding process.
Manage submission of hard and soft copy proposals, including design and formatting in line with corporate branding.
Track bid outcomes and obtain feedback on unsuccessful submissions to improve future bids.
Ensure return or cancellation of expired bid securities.
Strategic Execution & Tracking
Execute daily business development plans under guidance from the Agency Services Manager.
Support branch teams through joint fieldwork, coaching, and monitoring of performance across alternative business channels.
Track and report on channel performance, identifying areas of concern and opportunities for improvement.
Update daily reporting tools with pipeline activity, client engagements, and proposal statuses.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure strict adherence to regulatory, AML, KYC, and sanctions-related policies.
Perform client due diligence and escalate unusual activity to the Risk & Compliance Office.
Maintain documentation and records for all tenders, proposals, and client engagements in compliance with internal policies.
Customer Engagement & Relationship Management
Provide professional client service and address any emerging service-related issues.
Act as the point of contact for direct business customers and intermediaries.
Ensure customer queries and complaints are resolved promptly and effectively.
Additional Responsibilities
Prepare periodic business performance reports.
Assist in marketing activities and events to promote direct insurance products.
Support innovation initiatives and product development discussions.
Perform any other duties as assigned by management.
Criteria | Requirement |
Education | Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Management, or related field (Required) |
Professional Experience | Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in business development, insurance sales, or marketing |
Industry Knowledge | Strong understanding of general insurance products, tender processes, and compliance requirements |
Added Advantage | Experience working with digital channels, retail distribution, or partnerships in the insurance sector |
