Job Description
Position Title: Anaesthetic Officer
Location: Uganda – Mengo Hospital
Job Summary:
The Anaesthetic Officer will be responsible for the safe administration of anaesthesia in the hospital’s theatres. This includes providing local, regional, and general anaesthesia, as well as conducting thorough pre-operative and post-operative assessments. The role requires continuous intraoperative patient monitoring, emergency response, and collaboration with surgical teams to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Administer safe anaesthesia in accordance with hospital protocols, covering all surgical theatres.
Perform thorough pre-operative evaluations and post-operative assessments.
Maintain continuous monitoring of patients during surgical procedures.
Respond promptly to resuscitation needs and medical emergencies, particularly involving the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
Comply with instructions and surgical protocols provided by supervisors during operations.
Accurately identify and administer appropriate anaesthetic agents.
Mentor and guide nursing staff and students on anaesthetic techniques and drug usage.
Carry out duties as per the theatre duty roster or allocation plan.
Ensure proper care, maintenance, cleaning, and security of anaesthetic equipment and theatre assets.
Foster positive working relationships with colleagues in anaesthesia, surgical departments, hospital management, and wider hospital staff.
Participate in departmental meetings, clinical audits, CMEs, research, and promotional activities.
Prepare and submit timely reports to the Theatre Manager, Senior Anaesthetic Officer, or Head of Surgery.
Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years’ hands-on experience administering anaesthesia in a reputable healthcare setting or theatre.
Qualifications & Competencies:
Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia from a recognized institution.
Background in Clinical Medicine (Clinical Officer) or Registered Nursing or a related healthcare field.
Strong knowledge of anaesthetic procedures, emergency response, and patient care standards.
Good interpersonal skills, teamwork, and a commitment to professional development.
Professional Certification:
Registered with the Allied Health Professionals’ Council.
