Job Summary
Medical Teams International is seeking a skilled Anaesthetic Officer to support surgical operations by safely administering anesthesia and managing patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. This role plays a vital part in ensuring patient safety and supporting the organization's healthcare mission.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Pre-operative Duties
Conduct physical exams and review patient medical histories and lab results to assess surgical readiness.
Explain procedures, risks, and options to patients and obtain informed consent.
Complete necessary documentation, including written authorization for surgery.
Intra-operative Duties
Administer anesthesia to manage pain and consciousness during surgery.
Monitor and assess vital signs continuously throughout the procedure.
Respond swiftly to anesthesia-related emergencies or complications.
Post-operative Duties
Monitor patient recovery and determine when patients are stable for transfer or discharge.
Provide post-operative care and manage pain control.
Administrative & Supervisory Duties
Plan and budget for anesthesia services and supplies.
Ensure proper maintenance and functionality of anesthetic equipment.
Supervise and mentor theatre staff, including Theatre Assistants.
Oversee inventory, stock control, and usage of anesthesia supplies, including narcotics.
Compile and submit reports to relevant authorities.
Support research and quality improvement initiatives.
Emergency & Disaster Response
Deliver resuscitation and emergency anesthesia care during crisis or disaster scenarios.
Operational & Compliance Duties
Maintain high standards of hygiene, equipment sterilization, and infection control.
Follow ethical and professional codes of conduct.
Promote capacity building by offering continuous learning opportunities for staff.
Ensure all activities align with MTI’s mission and Code of Conduct.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education & Licenses:
Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Nursing, or Midwifery.
Diploma in Anaesthesia from a recognized institution.
Registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
Valid Annual Practicing License.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of experience administering anesthesia in a clinical setting.
Experience with international NGOs is an advantage.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge:
Solid understanding of anesthesia principles and procedures.
Familiarity with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.
Skills:
Strong technical skills in administering anesthesia and monitoring patients.
Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
Report writing and documentation skills.
Leadership and team development capabilities.
Abilities:
Committed to ethical standards and patient care.
Physically fit to assist with patient mobility when necessary.
Willingness to live and work in remote or resource-limited areas.
Dedicated to MTI’s mission and able to uphold its Code of Conduct.
